Re blanket: when we went to pick up Charlie we took the blanket with us. Breeder told us to rub it all over mum, including the teat area. Then Charlie was wrapped up in her blanket and came home with us. It worked well for her
Lisa i'm sure it did, or seemed to, and whichever it was, thats all that counts Some puppies I am certain take longer to settle when they are constantly reminded of their 'lost litter' by smells on blankets etc. But hey we will never know

We brought along a blanket for Mum's smell and were told in no uncertain terms by our breeder that it was just downright cruel to do that having weaned the pup from his Mum
So we never got blanket rubbed on Mum, Dylan settled brilliantly and like Di says we will just never know
Its just my own experience, its not scientific. But its from years of settling pups into homes (or not as the case may be) and whether there is a blanket/towel/smells of the litter/breeder etc has mattered not one jot in whether they did or didn't settle. In one litter you will get some that do. Some that don't. Some that sleep through from night one. Some that scream like banshees. Some that adore their crate. Some who never accept it and have to be uncrated within days for the owners sanity. Some have stuff from the breeder, some don't, but I think it is so much their personality. the routine the owner adopts straight off. If there are other dogs in the house for the pup to be near etc etc. Or if they are just plain secure in their own little skin (and many are).
But thats just a tiny tiny issue. And believe me its given enough credence in books etc and is hugely repeated because I do get asked by at least half the owners I sell to And I do apologise for waffling on a lovely thread...

Thanks for the replies. We did give a blanket which the breeder will put with both mum and other pups. Interesting to read other opinions, I think what we'll do is see how he goes that first night without the blanket, if he settles then fine, if not we'll put the blanket in to see if it makes any difference.
