The reason she`s ok at your friends house could be because its a place she hasn`t been before so she`s a bit reticent to go exploring, although that would be strange a for a Lab but i`m sure some would be like it |
I would never decrate her, she loves that crate more than anything. She has her travel crate at my friends and she likes that because she takes herself back in there when she wants some alone time. The crate will be around for as long as Indi is. When we go home tomorrow the first thing she will do is go straight into her metal crate curl up and lie there for some time, she really misses her other crate when she is away!!!Strange isnt it!
As for the exploring well Indi has no concept of personal or private space even in other peoples homes. Once she went upstairs and woke my friends 2 year old because she was asleep in bed and Indi hates people in bed!!They have to be up and paying her attention - whats the point otherwise lol! At this friends she is staying in now she snuck up there 5 mins after being in and I caught her rolling on my friends bed!!!
As for why she has always been crated is because we are in army quarters. Now the last place had a 'lovely' 1970's kitchen and as a pup Indi decided to take a HUGE chunk out of this cupboard. Now this new house is well ... new! Its only 5 years old,Rented off a german landlord and has a brand spanking new kitchen. Im just a little hesitant of her chewing a cupboard if she gets bored. These cupboards I cannot fix with cuprinol, white gloss paint and precariously placing myself in front in the hope the estate warden wont see it!!!I dont think she would now not if she had toys and her box and treats. No chew sprays dont work on Indi. We have even tried Extra extra extra hot chilli paste, habenero tabasco sauce, lemon juice, vinegar, marmite - everything! You name it, we have tried it and guess what Indi loves them all (the hotter the better!!!!!!!!!!)She sits there licking it off the cupboards the madam then looks at me for more!!!
I would rather keep her in her crate during the day if possible as I never leave her for more than a few hours and if im longer I get someone to go in! I just thought well if she can do it there and my friend says i dont give her enough credit. Maybe I dont but im so cautious of this house being damaged and the costs of rectifying it should she chew it. We already have to fill in holes and repaint where she chewed the plaster off the wall when she was a pup! I just wanted some advice on how to go about it etc.

If you are comfortable leaving her in her crate and she is happy with it, then why change? sometimes dogs do behave differently for people they are not overly familiar with.
I stilll crate Moz and Dream at night and when we are out otherwise I wouldn't have a house left and they are 3.5 and 2.5 - but ALL my dogs love the crates and when they are supposed to be empty, another dog can pretty much always be found in them (often more than one )
I tend to sit on the side of "if it ain't broke, why try and fix it"
