the stars are an awfully long way away, but a telescope is pretty cool for looking at the moon and the planets in our solar system and their moons, depending on what is visible at any time. a pair of astronomical binoculars might be a good alternative, but they are heavy so a tripod is necessary.
there is lots of info on the bbc website, you can get lots of info from the astronomy magazines that are published monthly.
i find that actually locating stuff in the night sky is pretty difficult so it is worth buying a planisphere, they are not too dear.
patrick moore also does some easy to understand books that are very useful. amazon normally has a good supply.
p.s let your neighbours know cos being out at night with binoculars or telescopes can lead to some odd looks!!
i was nearly arrested at a campsite a few years back! honest officer i was trying to find the moons of jupiter.

That's what all household telescopes will be used for at some point
One of my bro's friends lent us his telescope once. We looked at moons and planets on the first night, then the novelty wore off and next day we watched people eating their dinner in the cafes across the river......imagine our delight when we caught a taxi driver waiting on the prom picking his nose.
