Today I went in to work to some devastating news. One of the ponies died on friday =( It is so heartbreaking. But it has not even sunk it yet. I really cannot believe it!

Nearly 2 weeks ago now I went out to the pony field and found Ernie limping. I brought him up and the farrier confirmed an abscess in his hoof. So Ernie was put in a stable to heal. The next day his whole face was swollen. He could not even open his eyes. He did not eat any of his hay all night. The vet was called and he said it was a virus. A few days later his face went back to normal but he was still obviously sick. He stood in the same spot in the stable and still never touched the hay. On thursday I was with him trying to sort out his abscess. He looked very miserable. =( I really cannot believe he died!

When I came in today I was told he died friday afternoon. He got septicaemia.

Goodby precious Ernie. You were so young. Only 7. I am sure the whole yard will miss you so much!

I`m so sorry to hear this Sarah, thats too young for any animal to die but given that horses can live to very good ages moreso for Ernie.

I have no idea about strangles bring in the area. There was nothing said about it though..

It is even worse that our manager is in Australia until the middle of February. She cannot believe it either.

I cannot even explain how he was before he died. The vet was out with him everyday. How can a simple abscess turn into something so horrible? I will never think 'oh it is just an abscess' again. He is the second horse to die on the yard in 6 months =( It is so horrible. And it does not help that the next day another pony became sick with Colic. Thankfully he is on the mend but we thought Ernie was too Crying or Very sad

I just hope he did not suffer but seeing him in the days before he passed he just looked too sick. I have never seen a horse refuse food. Even the pony now with Colic is going crazy for some hay! One day last week one of the kids went into give him hay. She said he was standing by the wall and then he just collapsed. He got up and fell again a few times. Maybe he should have been PTS but we had no idea how bad it really was. He was getting better and the vet made no suggestion to do that. I doubt anyone would make that decision without the manager around.

They have decided to tell the kids who love him so much that he has gone away to retire Sad I don't know if that will help or not. When Wally died everybody knew.

I did get to have a go on this pretty pony last summer...Please ignore how bad the picture looks XD We had to go in and out of cones but he decided he wanted to go straight..

He was so cute though. He had a very nice head =)
