I'm searching for a new insurance for Duds after M&S have shot up to £599
I've more or less decided to go with either Sainsbury's or John Lewis but for the 'type of cover' one says lifetime cover whereas the other says maximum benefit.
Does anyone know what the difference is please?
Thanks x
Wendy that seems an awful lot we have life cover with pet plan which means covers all ailments for life as long as we stay with them I have not heard of Maximum cover unless it is related to the maximum the whole life of the cover for example we get £7000 cover for Max a year if he used it all up it on say elbows it would start again the next after the next renewal we get another £7000 but with maximum cover that is all you get so it say elbows came to £6500 even after renewal I would only get £500 for elbows but still have cover for anything else I think that was what they mean.

My understanding is that Lifetime cover is just that, you get a set amount for vets bills per year say £7000 pa which is renewed on the anniversary of the policy, whereas Maximum benefit would related to a condition, IE £7000 would cover the cost of each condition up to the maximum cost for treatment to £7000, once you have spent that amount on that condition you bear the costs yourself.

Read the small print. My policy has a maximum amount per condition over the lifetime of the dog, other policies have a maximum amount per year.
So, if I claimed for hip replacement and all the associated stuff (£4000?), then she was involved in an accident and broke a front leg (£2000?) and also was diagnosed with some other problem after lots of tests and hospitalisation (£1500?) this would be a total of £7500 in one year. My policy is £6000 per condition so all would be paid and any follow up treatment or medication would be covered for years to come up to £6000. Other policies have a maximum £7000 per year payout so would only cover the first £7000, no matter how many conditions, however, they would then payout another £7000 each year.
The payout per condition policies will usually need one excess for each condition no matter how many years it runs for, the per year maximums usually ask for an excess payment each year, even if it is for a condition that was claimed for in the previous year.
Thanks everyone - it's a nightmare trying to sort it out. I'm so worried that even things like a tummy bug which is on his records (no claim) will be counted as a pre-existing condition if ever we needed to claim for any future tummy problems. But I can't afford £600 for each dog (I'll obviously keep Charlie on as no-one else will ever insure him )
But Dudley seems healthy <frantically touches wood> so I really need to change
I'm going to call in at our vets and get a print out of any vet visits we've made with him to see if there is anything that can count as pre-existing

You star! I was trying to remember what it was that defined that. My lot are insured with AXA and all their policy wording says £7,000 per year - no mention of if it's per condition but I'm fairly sure that I spoke to them and clarified that it was per condition and this sort of backs it up because I've just paid 2 excesses - one for Bran's IBD and one for his ED. Phew! That's a relief! But I'll call again tomorrow to double check anyway

Wendy the vet nurse at my Vets had said More than were good don't know many you have looked at
I just went on Go Compare and picked out the best, can't remember why I discounted More Than - will look again
June there was very little difference between John Lewis and Sainsbury's - one was just over £20 per month and the other just over £21 per month
M&S came up at about the same for new customers (with Dudley's details) so that miffed me even more! I rang up and queried it and they said it's always cheaper the first year. Why don't these companies look after their customers?[/code]
