To help sending down a line of jumps we get the dogs to drive for a toy or treat (with a handy helper to prevent them getting it if they nip round the edge of the jump) starting off away from any equipment just doing it a little at home and difference places works a treat. My 6 month working cocker is too young to start any formal training yet but we are working on little bits of foundation to get the drive going We found a 6 point method to training anything which we where shown on a course works using weaves seems to work well with all the kit, you recall over from your left and right side, send over from your left and right side and run with on your left and right side. Helps the dog not to get distracted from what we are doing (as I know I sometimes flap my arms around like a nutter lol).
Lots of wagging Lizzie and a bouncier than bouncy Luna!! Tucker is so much steadier than her! He sits and looks glued and solid - she's always poised ready to launch!!
The run of 4 jumps he does on the vid was him heading out for his toy - so that definitely works as a driving forward tool!! He's getting trained to fetch things for me from around the house and is getting good at that. He loves retrieving and has fantastic speed across the ground when something falls!! And defo agree with them learning to recall, go forward and get used to me on all sides. Always train contact equipment like that too. Lots to learn and train yet!!! Fun, fun, fun!!
Laura, just a thought... Have you tried putting his toy out at the end of a line of jumps and then sending him but you running as well? Just wondered if it might get him used to driving forward with you running along side rather than looking to stick so closely to you all the time.
Oh yep Lizzie that has helped - that's what I was doing in the vid and this week he was already staying out to jump at times.
I think that I'm going to need a really clear hand signal that means 'go over' until he gets used to doing it - I was beginning to figure out what I was doing when it was going well last training so I don't think it'll take long to get things smoother!
Ah, sorry Laura. Didn't quite pick up on that from the video. I'm considering a trip to Leicestershire for the April show - need to work out quite how far away it is!!! Will I get the chance to see Tucker in action?!!
I'll try to get some Luna action next time we're training - she's not doing jumps and because the courses are set up to get the younger dogs going it's a bit stop start for her as we avoid that equipment veteran dogs don't have to do!!
I am working towards April being Luna and Tucker's first outing into the competition scene this year... fingers are very tightly crossed that Luna won't need right elbow op and Tucker cottons on to running with me though!!! I'll be there helping out even if the dogs aren't up to running! It would be lovely to see you and Bamber up this way Lizzie!
Laura I am sure it will not be long until we see Tucker running with you he seems to really love the Agility and I am looking forward to more updates in the future. Fingers crossed for Luna Elbows hoping that she can get back doing some veteran agility soon
