Really pleased I found this site, just getting to grips with it, but seems some useful info on here. We havent picked our puppy yet, we are on a few lists but this in its self seems to be causing so many "which one" debate!
Mahsa has repeatedly dirtied her crate once we shut she in it at night. So it's easier to se the alarm to get up to her. Gonna be a long road getting her to last the night I think...
Sam's been in a crate at night since he came home and I did shut the door and didn't get up and he's been absolutely fine, he loves his den and prefers to go there if I'm out I think he thinks its his bedroom and hes safe there and like CJ he gets a treat when he's in there so what's not to like! Sam went from 10pm - out for last toilet on a lead so I could make sure he did go then straight in bed and as soon as the first person got up in the morning straight down and straight outside no messing about for the human first and that worked fine, here I'm usually up at 6am so that was his routine really. I think that its a good idea to take them out as soon as they hear you get out of bed because I figure they wake up and realise their bladder is full but when they're asleep they don't so as long as you get them outside quick then there's no problem - maybe I'm kidding myself but hey it worked for us! Sam didn't have a big crate to start with he's gone up in size he did and does love his smaller crate more than the big one though the daft nutter I put it up again the other week when I was puppy sitting for a friend and guess which one was in there...it wasn't the puppy! Sam was rather pleased with himself That smaller one is a tabby I from zooplus and they are really well made supercrates so easy to clean too as there is a tray below the part they're actually in so I just popped vet bed on the top. Sam now has a 48" crate that he doesn't like as much but could pretty much have a house party in its huge! Ir clanks a lot more than tabby ever did which is what I think he's not keen on I've had to put blankets between the tray and the wires to quieten it. Watch out for what the one you buy is made of! Be aware if you buy one of those 48" straight away that it will take up a lot of space in your house so work out where you're going to put it first. Sam's fully grown but only a little lab and he can fit in there with me and another dog with plenty of room just to give you an idea of the size!
Have a read of the stickies at the top of the puppy section here I think they will tell you everything you need to know and help you figure things out instead of whizzing round in circles I certainly wish I found LF sooner when Sam was a pup everyone here has been brilliant.
Do post some pics when your little one comes home.
I've been reading this thread with great interest as we will be purchasing a crate for our puppy that we are getting in 3 weeks. We will be getting one with a divider but want to double check what size to get. Ideally we only want to use it while he's a puppy so need to know if a 36" one would be ok.
For my bitches, I always start with an old 24 inch crate which they soon grow out of. Then I move to a 36 inch which lasts mine through until I decide to stop using them at possibly just over a year old.
It sounds a little expensive having two crates, but it is important to restrict space, particularly in the early stages, to help with house training and the first few weeks, the formative period is so important. If you choose to only use one crate then as others have said, restrict the space with some form of partition.
