Where do you think your glossary of terms would leave you in a field trial answering the original post !!
Regards, S
Well, if I know there are obstacles to be cleared I line the dog up and send on 'over' and not 'back'. Just as I would if I know the dog has to pick a bird from water with a send of 'get in' for example. The dog then knows not to stop and run along any obstacles but to clear them until such time it happens upon a bird or dummy. Should there be two fences to clear I would hope both the dogs superior intelligence plus inititive to mine, and infinately better nose would have it clearing both. You can get caught out a million and one ways at a competition or picking up, I have chosen this method for this particular dog because it's what suits him and me and has given us the greatest success so far
Diana,
The whole point of the original post was to open a informative debate based on experiences, and yes even with the back command at an obstacle a dog can have at that point a confidence loss/defiance moment and refuse. It was to gather responces wether people thought it be worth while adapting training methods as i`m sure we all do,with a bit of banter thrown in, I certainly did not want to provoke the throwing down of sensitive guantets, or maybe we cannot judge mood in email form .By the way keep guessing K.
Barny,
Thanks for the reply, and yes i would push the dog back the same albeit different commands and would also add if the wind was coming towards us,we would succeed, its just that i would like to go that bit further.
Regards I
He he! You lot ought to see my fully trained fundog in action!
She's only lost three toys in her almost 4 years of life through my ability to control her! (1 to a nasty dog who wasn't going to give it back and neither was it's owner , one to water and wind blowing it out of her trained retrieve range and the other down a badger hole!)
AND here is the list of most of the commands verbal and non-verbal that she is able to respond to in order to achieve this lack of loss!!!
Non-Verbal:
A push back with a high arm
A right arm direction signal
A left arm direction signal
A downwards spinning hand signal
3 peeps to recall on whistle
A point to object
The line up to send
2 arms out stretched to recall
One hand pointing into the other meaning give it to me don't drop!
(Notice the absence of Stop Whistle
Don't worry we're going no where near any tests but wouldn't she have been a star if you gundog people had got hold of us before we'd already trained ourselves!!
I use less commands when controlling kids - stop, here, sit, stay, ssssh!
