Although I haven't got any holiday's planned, I put Bella into kennels for 2 nights when she was 6 months old. At this point she was still very clingy with me and didn't like to leave me at all, so I thought it would be good to do a trial run in the event I did need to put her in kennels (for whatever reason). The first time I took her, she walked up the path with the handler and kept looking back at me. It broke my heart and I nearly took her home with me, but stayed strong. The 2nd time I put her in kennels, she strained at the lead to get in the gate and didn't give me a backward glance
She is always thrilled to see me, but also seems to enjoy her stay in the kennels

Coco and Marley always stay in the kennels when we go away for the weekend. Usually once or twice a year. They love it there! But when we come to collect them they get soo excited! Charlie will be going with them next month when we go away for a few days. I hope he likes it too!

Milo hasn't been in kennels. Now my girls are older, they have had him if I've needed to go away(although thinking about it, it's when I was in hospital for 2 weeks last year! Not holidays!) And my eldest keeps asking me when she can have him stay with her!
Zak my old boy used to go in kennels all the time when we went away. Simply because I couldn't leave him in the house and have a sitter or him go to stay in a friends house because he chewed EVERYTHING!! He loved going to the kennels and the kennel staff loved him. One even said he was the favourite at the kennels! I always felt guilty leaving him but he always came home happy!
Giddy our first boy only went in kennels for one night and that was the day we got married. We felt we couldn't kennel him for holidays because of his previous history. So holidays were either a caravan, tent or boat in this country!
Thankyou everyone,i feel so much better.Im such a softie and imagine him lying on a cold concrete floor crying for us ,although i know that wont be the case though at all.Overnight trial runs sound a great idea, someone has suggested house boarding too where he'll stay with a family and thats sounds just the thing for my pampered boy.We will be going to Cornwall with him and may do just one week abroad, think id be too traumatised to leave himxx

Its always good to have a trial.
Even if it's for a day while you go shopping, or visiting, then go back and collect in the evening. Then the next time, do a whole day and night.
Honestly - if its a GOOD kennel he will LOVE it .... AND come back knackered! lol xxx
Troy has only stayed in kennels for a couple of nights at a time. Then a couple of years ago I discovered someone who does home boarding, not far from me. Since then Troy has stayed with her (or other boarders that she knows) while we have been on holiday. I don't have a problem with using kennels, I just prefer him to be in someones home. Troy loves it too. Whenever we go round he knows where we are and jumps out of the car and runs straight to her front door!
Whether you use a kennel or a home boarder, I would recommend 1-2 days trials. Not just for the dog, but for you aswell! The first time we left him, both me and OH had tears in our eyes!
We travel down to Cornwall and board ours in a kennel there - its a loooong journey from Manchester, but the boys LOVE it!! What makes me feel most guilty is returning and bringing them home, the fun we had trying to get them to stop playing and get in the car last time
They'll be going again shortly and as soon as I tell them about "Aunty Jackie" they start getting all giddy.
