Hi All

Well we are back from the vets. He is perplexed as Mac isn't limping and he can't ellicit a pain response Confused He said he wouldn't know where to begin with X-rays unless he X-rayed him top to toe. Of course Mac bloomin lay down in the waiting room for the vet to see Embarassed

So we have come home with a pretty high dose of Tramadol to give on a decreasing dosage scale over the next 5 days inconjunction with daily Metacam. The vet says there are 3 possible outcomes

1) He gets better and when he comes off it stays better - great and we just put it down to a blip or maybe a pulled something we never get to the bottom of.

2) He gets better and when he comes off it the symptoms return which shows it is pain and he will then X-ray Mac's pelvis as a starting point.

3) He gets no better and we have to think again

At the mo I have managed to finally get him to lie on his bed in the lounge and am letting him rest.

The vet did exam his hips and spine and said he couldn't find anything.

I'll keep you updated on how he gets on. The vet said the Tramadol can sometimes make them a bit sleepy so we are going to give that in the evenings in the hope it helps Mac sleep and stick with the Metacam in the morning.

Thanks again for all your support, advice and kind words.

Juliet and Mac

I guess the vet is doing what he thinks best, it`d cost a fortune to x-ray him all over with no idea of where to start.

Hope the meds help him and he makes a good recovery without needing further treatment.

supposed to be changing beds but just had to come back on to see if there was any news on Mac.

Good news that spine and hips seem OK Very Happy

I guess let's hope for outcome number 1 that he gets better and stays better and it's a muscle pull or something.

This is going to sound daft but there isn't anything sticking out of his bed causing him not to lay on it is there Embarassed

keep us posted and good luck with the lovely Mac

xx

Let's hope he tablets work soon and it's just a blip.
What insurance have you got for him? (sorry if you've already said but I'm only on heere briefly - will reply to your pm later Wink ). If the tablets don't help I was going to suggest asking for a MRI scan as well as they show up different things to xrays.

Fingers crossed he's feeling better soon x

Thanks guys

Sue - yep I checked the bed yesterday thinking that but he has two beds so weird not to lay on either. Also Mac is noramlly quite happy to lie on the wood floor in the dining room or the carpet in the lounge so the fact he won't lie anywhere (other than the vet's waiting room...lol!) is strange.

Wendy - thanks. I am a neuroradiogapher when I am not on maternity leave and totally agree that MRI is much better than X-ray's, certainly for spinal stuff. Discs don't show on X-rays, only the vertebrae so unless you can see a compressed vertebrae or slipped vertebrae you can quite easily have a normal spinal X-ray and still have a massive disc problem. Even the vet said I would be better putting Mac in the scanner at work......think the NHS might have an issue with that somehow!!!!!!

He is resting now so that is a lot better than the pacing. Just about to make myself some lunch so that will be telling.....a normal Mac always comes to help!

Will see how the next few days go.

Bye for now

Juliet and Mac
