Well NoName that sounds fab and you've put so much thought and time and effort in already keep that up and you'll be the perfect lab parent. Now I only have to add that of course yellow lab boys are the best but then I would say that wouldn't I!
(though if you like wearing black clothes that may not be a good idea given how much of my boys hair seems to migrate onto me! )
I went for a lab without doing any research I think if I had, I may never have got Harry and then Bella when I lost him, but I don't regret it (not now anyway ). I have wanted a dog since leaving home (I grew up with Beagles) and as much as I love Beagles, I wanted a more easily trained dog and one that I could let off the lead during walks. Bella fits the bill on both those counts She has been a little devil at times and there have been times (particularly recently during her season), when I would quite happily have throttled her. I don't have a garden anymore, just a muddy bog, so the solution I have decided is to put down artificial turf
I had always planned on getting a rescue greyhound as a second dog when Bella was older, but then Shadow came along (2 months ago) and she is beautiful. All I have to do now is get a black rescue lab to complete the set
The only other health hazard is that they can become addictive

Never forgetting Harry : 18/01/11 - 14/05/11 RIP
There have been some very good replies to your question and there is little we can add other than to say that we were in a very similar position last year and unsure whether to get a lab.
We went ahead, bought a black lab bitch and have never looked back, we only wonder why we didn't do it sooner.
She has her moments but the occasional mishaps are easily outweighed by all the great stuff.
Ideally I would like a dog who is very laid back in the house, who wants to be with the family but isnt overly boisterous in the house. However I also am more than happy for a dog that comes to life and really enjoys being outside. We go camping on occasion and always took our previous dog with us and would be planning on taking a furture dog with us. I want one that wants to learn and enjoys training. I train by positive methods using fun and games as rewards.
If I were you, I'd be looking for a Working type or part Working type Lab but one with an Off Switch. There are plenty about if you look .
Just be aware that some working types seem to have a nervous/suspicious streak and some others don't seem to have an off switch (a bit like some Border Collies), but if you do your homework, you should easily be able to find a nice biddable, working type suitable for you.
