I do milbemax once every three months but frontline monthly as I'm in a seriously high risk area for piroplamosis a nasty tick borne disease that's fatal if not treated promptly. Coco had it and it scared the bejesus out of me. Been to the vets today and they have a big poster proclaiming a new vaccine against leishmaniasis. Another thing to worry about that's spreading inland from coastal areas. Bummer. Sad

Bethan, I live in France like Julian. We have a couple of extra things to worry about but I believe there's similar problems in the uk too.

Ten days after installing myself in France,I almost lost Benji to Pyroplasmosis from a tick. I didn't know at the time this virus existed. He deteriorated rapidly over a weekend.I didn't know what was wrong with him.I rushed him to the Vets first thing on the Monday, paralysed in my arms he was !!! The Vet administered the antidote and showed me under the microscope the virus spreading in the blood sample he'd taken. It was frightening to see the speed these white virus cells were mutiplying.
I then had the most worrying 2 hrs of my life because the Vet sent me home, and said that if Benji doesn't improve in the next 2 hrs,he's sorry ......... Shocked !!

Omg Julian. I nearly lost coco after a month of us being here!! We had piroplamosis and a bloody hotspot in the space of 2 months both of which I'd never come across before. I'm hot as hell now on frontline, and fine tooth comb at certain times of year and we keep our field mown like a english lawn as its in the long grass the ticks hang out. Our neighbours think we are nuts mowing 4.5 acres!! It's made a big difference in the tick front though.

Scary isn't it. Coco was back to normal within 24 hours but it scared me to death. They don't tell you about these things when you move here!!

No they certainly "don't" tell you!! There should be warnings at every port of entry to France!
I have a major problem with ticks...Frontline is an absolute must.Frontline does kill the ticks, while they're sucking blood. Hardly a day went by in the summer months when I wasn't removing ticks from Benji.Kenko has this to come!! You normally don't see them until they've drunk their fill of blood and swollen to the size of a pea !! You'll know that already Nicola!! Because I do gardening work from Spring to Autumn,I'm forever removing ticks from myself ... before they've imbedded themselves in me,if I'm lucky !!
Can you believe, that due to the recent mild temperatures,I felt a tick crawling across my arm a week ago!!...at 4am. when in bed! I was horrified when I saw what it was !!

Ewwwww. Milly is the one that gets the most as she's an independent explorer but she has a fine coat do they're easy to spot. It's a nightmare to spot on the others. The best thing is just a serious Manual examination which they quite enjoy.

I've only even had one on me at the back of my neck just below the hairline but hubby's had a few. I won't mention where!!!

You need to find someone to frontline you!! Hehe! Laughing

TBH we havent 'done' Max in 2011!!! shock horror. I've heard too many stories about effects of Frontline (which we use). We used it only once in 2011 and not so far in 2012.

I ignore the recommendations, we have no ticks, fleas etc. If we had, I'd use it. A tick remover has dealt with couple of problems we had; no fleas so why subject poor Maxy boy to a dousing with a rotten chemical when its not needed? When I see fleas I will.

Dont always follow the 'guidelines'.

I haven't found a tick <touch wood> since returning to the UK in 2009, I got used to pulling ticks off Luna in Belgium and was religious when worming her. I've got more and more relaxed now and as L&T are swimming so much which reduces the working of frontline I'm holding fire on 'regular' applications. Tapeworm worming I do every 3months because of certain yuck habits these 2 have Rolling Eyes I've always used drontal but vet recommended milbemax as it covers lungworm and as Tucker had a nasty reaction to Drontal we'll be giving Milbemax a go next time they're due!

Our area is high risk for Lung worm so I use Advocate [not as often as recommended] usually 6/8 wks, also Drontal.
