Oh wow Hayley - what a fantastic trip to do. I haven't done NY yet but have done other American cities.
Depending on the time of year will also dictate which game you can get to see...
New York Jets or Giants( Football ) Runs September through to January
New York Knicks ( Basketball) Runs November through April
New York Yankees or Met ( Baseball) Runs March to October
New York Islanders (Hockey) Runs October to April
When we were in San Fransisco we went to 49ers game - and it was brilliant it lasts all day and it is a real family and social event - so my preference would be see the Giants first and as they are in this years Superbowl against the New England Patriots - you could be watching a quality team.
Before I married my husband I didn't watch must sport other than the odd rugby match but if we are travelling somewhere there is a big sporting event on we will do our best to go.
Baseball World series would be good too if you could get there but I wouldn't be fussed by Ice Hockey so that would be the least favourite.
My Son and DIL are going to New York in February and they are travelling Virgin and have got 4* hotel the name of which escapes me but I shall let you know once they come home.

Thanks for that info. Would be great if you could let me know where they booked through/name of hotel etc!!! Still looking but not sure where we are going to stay still!! We are looking along the lines of 5th Avenue as that is quite central to most of the sights etc!
New York one of my favourite towns, i have been very lucky and been there a few times both for fun and for work.
New york is a bit like a lot of villages merged together each one having a different feel, so grab a guide book (lonely planet is good) and have a think about where you want to be. Personally i love Chelsea and down town more than the swankier uptown, it feels less toursity, i also like the area around by the Empire state building and have stayed in the Roger Williams hotel a few times which is a great small hotel. The hotels really vary in style and of course price, The Dream is very cool boutique hotel which is great but i didnt like the location it was to far up town near the park, although i have heard they have opened a second hotel. Its worth having a look at lastminute.com as you can search on hotels and have a look, the descriptions are pretty good, and most also have a map view and a list of things they are close to.
Getting around NY on the subway is really easy once you get the hang of the different lines, again a good guide book is invaluable.
my list of things not to miss include, a twilight walk over Brooklyn bridge, start Brooklyn side and walk towards the wonderful NY skyline watching it as it lights up. Ellis Island, amazing place really interesting, tour of Radio City music hall, just wonderful if you like 30's art deco buildings, Macys - great shopping, Greenwich village for breakfast, and little Italy which is now sadly little more than one street (Mulberry) great place to have a coffee and people watch... on my goodness, I want to go to NY now..
