Well guys as you know adam is away and last time he came back from Iraq he took me to London for a long weekend. Anyway this time he says we are going to NEW YORK!!!! Ive always wanted to go there and will be another stamp in my passport!!! Im very excited about that!!! Anyway I need some advice. Can anyone recommend any good hotels? Also any way of getting a good cheap deal but for a decent enough hotel - Ive looked at 1 called the Hotel 373. I want to be within the center of NY flying into JFK. Im not to fussed it doesnt have breakfast as we plan to eat out as much as possible and soak up the American culture! Also how do we get from the airport to the hotel - how expensive are the taxis?
We are going to do all the usual things of the carriage rides in central park, go up the rockerfella center and the empire state and go to the statue of liberty. Take in a game - still a bone of contention do we go baseball, american football or ice hockey - if so which team do we support!!! lol! And he is taking me to tiffanys so we can have breakfast there!! hehe!!! Im very excited as you can probably tell but would love some advice on good hotels, packages etc.
Poor Indi will miss out on this trip to a new city but we`ll make it up to her some how Im sure something with a I luv NY on it!
You do know that the words American and Culture don't actually go together don't you...Like Military and Intelligence...
Seriously though, it's something to really look forward to, when I was out there, we had already booked a family holiday for us t og ot obarcelona on my return. Was something that helped us both get through the deployment - and was a focus for the future and not to concentrate on how pants things could get at times being apart.
Hope you have a lovely time. (Oh and sorry, I've not been to NY so I can't offer any advice other than to say go to a Football game! It's more understandable than Baseball and less violent than Hockey!)
I can't give you advice on hotels as I stayed in Brooklyn first time and the hotel in Manhatten wasn't that great the second time.
You can get a cab from outside of JFK into the city for a reasonable price. I think it was about £30 including the tolls but the price might have gone up since then. I'm sure it was a fixed price to anywhere in Manhatten so the current price is probably available online somewhere.
It's a bit of a boring tip but you can get a week ticket for the subway fairly cheap and ride on it as much as you like. Trust me, your legs will be aching and you'll be glad of it!
If you have time go on the Staten Island ferry. It give you the iconic views of NY and the statue of liberty for free! If you really want to go to liberty island then do but if you're not that bothered I wouldn't waste my time especially if you're only there a short time.
Oh you lucky thing. So plenty of things to look forward to
We stayed at the Wellington Hotel. It was a reasonable price and although a bit dated, it was clean.
But it was in a perfect location. it sright next to central park, just a stroll from Times square, rockerfeller, statue of liberty etc etc.
You should defo go to Century 21 department store. Its just opposite ground zero (which is another amazing and very moving place to see).
Century 21 is a mahoovise shop with designer clothes, shoes, accessories all at cheap cheap cheap prices.
Park central is where my parents stay normally which is good. I've normally stayed with friends or little hotel on the upper east side.
Def go to the Natural history museum and see the space show. Very good. The MET is a good place esp if weather is awful and get the head phones as u learn more. Good egyptian collection.
The south seaport area is good for a spot of lunch and fab views of Brooklyn bridge.
Having done the empire state and the rockerfella.... The top of the rock is better as u can see the empire state! Makes for better photos and better view of the park
There is a fab BBQ grill place called virgils which has great atmosphere and good food. It's near times square. It's in w 44th street between 7th & 6th ave

Very exciting! We stayed at the Radisson Lexington. It wasn't too posh, but was in the best location ever (we walked everywhere) and wasn't too expensive (we booked ages in advance through expedia).... and breakfast was included. Woohoo! Have fun
If you go to the Top of the Rock in the evening you can watch the sun set from up there and get some amazing photographs of the city during the day/dusk/night too.
How lovely, we stayed at the Westin hotel which is a lovely hotel and right in the thick of it in time square.
I agree about going up the Rock the veiw was to die for
Hubby also said a basket ball game would be nearer! Madison square gardens.
Anyway there is soooo much to do and we plan to go back for all the things we never got round to and to do the things again Have a wonderful time xx
On a more sombre note...top of my list of "must visit" would be Ground Zero.I'd pay homage to all that lost their lives and the 400 Rescue dogs that helped in the rescue effort.
As Adam is serving in Afghanistan,Ground Zero is directly relevant to why he's out there.
New York is awesome !!!...Have a fantastic trip !!!

Hayley what a brilliant idea to have something so exciting to plan for and look forward to on Adam's return. I'm sure this will help you both to get through the time apart.
I will watch this thread with interest as my son and I are planning to go next year as a belated 21st (his ) present.
