Well to add to the essentials others have given above things that are handy to have are:

kitchen roll - useful for mopping up all sorts of disasters then the middle tube can become a free toy!

poo bags - personally I find the lavendar scented ones from pets@home are nice and thick as well as cheap.

clean-n-safe spray - again from P@H but useful for cleaning up all sorts of accidents, stains and smell as well as killing germs, if you've got some in the cupboard then its there if you should need it.

more than one bowl - obviously not essential but pups eat lots of times a day and it saves having to keep washing up.

car seat cover for whatever part of the car you intend them to travel in, saves hours of trying to get hair off seats and doesn't have to be fancy a sheet is fine but waterproof car seat ones are useful for all sorts of things not all dog related e.g. moving furniture, going to the tip, they're easy to clean and should last a lifetime.

a spare washing up bowl and wash basket to dump dirty towels/bedding/bowls etc in until you can sort them out - say if they have an accident in the crate when they're pups or when you've got ditched at the park when they're bigger!

Fun things I'm glad we bought -

Tuffy toy - my Sam has had his purple octopus since the first day he came home and adores it.

Nylabone keys - he LOVED them as a pup and when he was teething, get the large blue/red/yellow one not the small ones though. Once they get bigger teeth they do have to be exchanged for grown-up nylabones like the galeio or big dog ones but the key are perfect for pups.

Very Happy

Old towels are good for emergency bedding (when the rest is wet/dirty) and can also be used for mopping up accidents or to protect your clothes and furniture from dog hairs/dirt when having cuddles.

If you have an open plan home stairgates can be useful.

Puppy collar and lead.

Name tag (you don't need the dog's name, just yours, your address and contact numbers).

You can also pre-plan your training and vetinary care. Ask around for recommendations before you get your pup then you can get started as soon as possible with both.

A toothbrush (no need to buy a special one) and grooming brush (a soft one to start with) should be early purchases - start when your pup is young so it gets used to being handled from day one.

Old clothes - puppy teeth are sharp and can cause damage when pup decides to swing on your trouser leg or climb your legs with needle claws.

Above all, enjoy and take loads of photos, they grow up far too quickly.

Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant thank you all so much.

Needed an excuse to get a new washing up bowl, and vet bed is right up there on my list now. Have emailed around to ask for towels to create a stash of them.

4 weeks today and my new baby comes home, not that I am excited but we now have a 4GB sd card !

Have waited a very long time to love this little bundle.

Must ring puppy school tomorrow....

Quite a lot of people believe that when you teach your puppy to go to the toilet on puppy pads then you are teaching him/her that it is ok to use indoors as a toilet (albeit in a certain space). You then have to re-train them off the puppy pads and into going outside. The obvious question is why not just train them to go outside in the first place? Some people swear by them (I never used them) but it seems to be a case of each to their own.

Some puppies just think puppy pads are a plaything put there for them to rip up.

I know it is very cold outside at the moment but if you take a puppy outside often enough and watch it until it performs, then praise/reward, it will soon learn that outside is the place to go. The effort you put in during the first few weeks will pay dividends - a few weeks of discomfort and disturbed nights will result in a nicely housetrained puppy. Don't just open the door for it to go on its own, you need to be there to make sure it does go to the toilet and receives praise for doing so. I slept in jogging bottoms and t shirt for a few weeks then I could just throw a coat and some shoes on to go outside during the night.
