Hi all I'm new to this forum today. I've got a 6 month old black lab who has been having a problem with really runny poo for a while. He's currently fine on his current food which is royal canin gastro intestinal junior (£45 for 12 kg). The vet treated him for giardia and started him on this food. He's been on it for a month now and his poo is fine. The vet suggested keeping him on it for a month or so before changing him. I've tried introducing James wellbeloved and royal canin Labrador junior both caused the very loose poo to return. If anyone has any ideas of a good dry food for sensitive labs I'd be really grateful.
Thanks in advance.
Mike.

Royal canin does not rate highly in any independent dog food reviews, you may want to take a peek at a few sites. Did you buy him from a breeder who had pups on this food? Also, six months is the age if you are a believer in puppy foods, that I'd suggest changing over to an adult variety, I don't personally believe in life stage foods.

Welcome to the forum btw, I'm very recently returned myself Smile

I found Fish For Dogs great for solid poos in both our dogs after they tried another food and were very runny.

Royal canin contains quite a few fillers, it's one of two pushed by vets, the other is Hills Science, neither are that good quality going by the reviews tbh.

Hi and Welcome to LF Smile

I used to feed Bella Royal Canin but it never really agreed with her. I moved her to Burns Adult at 6 months and she has been fine.

On the note of giardia, have you had confirmation from your vet that he is definitely clear of it. Giardia can be a swine to shift. What did he give you to treat it and how long was the course? Often vets will give Panacur, but that doesn't always work.

I swapped my 3 from JWB to Simpson's sensitive (grain free) salmon & potato and their poos became instantly firm and the quantity reduced to 1 maybe 2 poos per day and they look so fabulous on it Very Happy

The vet initially gave a 5 day course of panacur which from day 3 stopped the diarrhoea but on day 6 when the panacur had finished the symptoms returned. So I took him back and the vet gave him a 10 day course and he has been fine since. I really don't want to keep him on the royal canin gastrointestinal junior in view of the price, that I'm not hearing great things about royal canin and that it is generally used as a food for recovery periods.

I have 2 friends who's dogs had giardia after the course of panacur/ABx they still had months and months of sloopy poos following my recommendation they both swapped them onto the Simpson's salmon & potato and both instantly firmed up and they've had no problems since Very Happy

My GSP had a bad bout of giardia a few months back. He needed Panacur and then a week of high dose metronidazole to shift it, which it did but giardia can leave the intestines sensitive for a while after treatment particularly if they've had the giardia a while and had a nasty infection.

It has only been the past month that my GSP seems to have got less sensitive so it has taken a few months for the intestines to recover.

I would stick with the prescription food for the time being and then look for a food thats very gentle and bland..Burns springs to mind..basically you want minimal food reaching the intestines while they are recovering. It can also help to feed 3 or 4 smaller meals rather than 2 so that the digestive system isn't having to process large amounts of food in one go.
