We've always had boys, not really sure why.

We chose our Golden Retriever based on his personality - the naughty one chewing mums bag... Not sure if my parents went with an idea to have a boy or girl as I was only young.

I wanted a black pup when we got Theo, as it turned out he was the only black in his litter but we wanted a boy anyway as Goldie was 13 and entire and we thought bringing in a bitch who would have a season before being spayed would be a bit unfair on him. Obviously we could have spayed her earlier but personally I'd rather she'd have had a season.

Digger just happened to be male... I didn't have a preference. I wanted a pup to bring to uni, mum didn't think an ickle 8 week old would be ideal and then a friend mentioned her dad had a pup unsold from his last litter (he works his dogs and breeds once/twice a year). I went to see this little yellow sweety called Digger and couldn't say no!

Digger is the biggest cuddle monster in the world, he is the most affectionate dog I have met and in his ideal world would be with me 24/7. He genuinely just wants to please and tries to do things right - altho of course does have his naughty moments! He's quite timid and jumpy but can be boisterous when playing and when he knows you.

Theo is cuddly but is much more his own dog. He likes a cuddle but generally on walks would rather do his own thing! He is trainable and does want to please but its normally on his terms and when he's ready :/ he is however a really good house dog who just likes to snooze on the sofa!

Neither mark when walking on lead as they've never been allowed. Theo does have a slight problem with other entire males if he's on his lead but with work it has improved and we think it's down to experiences he's had in the past.

I really think sex is one of those personal preference things and I would happily have a bitch or a dog.

All my life we have a labrador bitch in the family, they were always spayed after their first season and great family pets, until my mums last bitch she was the most unloyal dog ever.
My sister has 5 labs (4 bitches 1dog) her dog Harry is the softest dog ever, so when having our last labrador we had a change and I now have Arley who is the biggest cuddle monster on this earth, he has a mind of his own esp when other dogs are around but is gradually getting better on his selective recall, once he was neutered his marking when out on walks became less, and other dogs aggression towards him has stopped, he is the best thing that happened to me and I love him to bits, he loves company and thinks when the door bell goes someone is coming to play with him!! The postman calls him "Killer
I think it depends on the dogs breeding and upbringing.

Good luck with your choice. Most labs shown love will return it.

Therein lies the problem. The owners LET them do it. I don't know what it is about a lot of pet owners, but they seem to just accept that boy dogs c*ck their legs up everything. They don't seem to realise they could train them otherwise. You don't get Guide Dogs or Assistance Dogs dragging their owners to every lamp post, so it is definitely something you can train out of them, especially if you start from young pups.

Just one thing I thought of while we are talking about Scent Marking, is that a lot of dog boarders won't take in entire boys, because even if they never mark in their own homes, they will still often mark in other people's. We have a fair few dog walkers round here who won't walk entire boys either, although I guess this is probably linked to there being so many in season bitches being walked and the entire boys losing their heads over them. I haven't seen any refusing castrated boys though. Not that it's a problem keeping a boy entire, if you aren't ever going to leave him with a Boarder or a Walker though.

when we go Tiber I knew I wanted a boy dog - and my reasons?

Well I grew up with 2 fantastic boy yellow labs and so it just seemed naturual that we would get another boy (my sister couldn't believe we had got a black lab and not a yellow one - thank goodness we didnt shock her anymore by getting a girl!!!)

I also didn't want to have to deal with seasons!

Tiber has his moments when he is a mummy's boy and then he can also be a daddy's boy. He is not super affectionate all the time - he enjoys cuddles but also enjoys spreading out on the bed by himself too!

I personally think that it comes down to personal preference. I think female labs are just as lovely as the boys and they all have their indivudal characters! But what ever you choose - I'm sure you will love him/her to pieces!!!
