Hi everyone, I have been searching (ploughing through) the internet trying to find a labrador puppy. I have a very clear image of the type of labrador I like and love the Carpenny ones and several other show lines. So if anyone can point me in the direction of the best place to look I would be very grateful! Must be from parents with excellent health checks/ hip scores/ eye checks etc. There seem to be a lot of 'hobby' breeders out there and the top breeders seem quite difficult to find online! Many thanks, Tara

Most of the show breeders have pages on champ dogs. Migt be a place to start. I'd find a kennel you like and call them. If they have no current or planned litters they can inform you of kennels who have used their stud dogs. Good luck

Just remember that what you call hobby breeders may well have the same and sometimes more health tests in place than some professional kennels. Its not necessarily the ones that are expected to be the best that are the best, in fact just recently i was looking at a very well known kennel some of whose breeding stocks horrified me by their hipscores.
Sorry, just many of us hobby breeders are actually doing a pretty good job and i dont take kindly to being put down for not being a professional!

I would look on champdogs and also KC they have a list of accredited breeders as has been said some hobby breeders have great puppies with excellent hip scores and full health checks the puppies from small breeders with everything in place are as good as big kennels in my opinion I would use Champdogs I got my lovely max off a breeder on there not one of the huge kennels just 5 bitches but what a fantastic dog I got from her well socialized very well behaved and a very good pedigree. Very Happy

Thank you .... if anyone has an email address or phone number for Penny at Carpenny please could you emailme or message me?

loonylab I am very happy to buy from a smaller breeder (I breed horses and agree that small breeders can also be excellent) but when faced with hundreds of adverts on local newspapers and things and no parentage/ health check scores readily available it is proving very hard to find! When I say 'hobby breeders' I mean people with one family dog that they have covered with any dog down the road not small breeders that are breeding from excellent dogs with good health scores. And yes I too have found 'top breeders' whose dogs had hip scores that I would certainly not consider breeding from! No offence was intended and certainly wasnt meant to imply small v. big breeders. More indiscriminate v. serious well thought breeding.

I like the chunkier type but must be real show quality with excellent health score on parents. So if anyone can recommend a GOOD big or small breeder that would be great.
