Hi! Im new here and im hoping for some advice. I have an 9 week old chocolate labrador called Yogi who we have had for 2 weeks, We got him early because his mam was taken away from them because she neede an operation. I also have a 21 month old son called Alfie.

Yogi is doing quite well and is settling in well. He's playful and fun. Hes now trained to sit and paw using the clicker method. Were trying out best to potty train. Hes good 90% of the time and goes on his puppy pads but doesnt like to poo on there and has the odd accident but i expect that so young. We have a big garden and let him out first thing on a morning, after every meal and every hour or so. He just wont wee outside tho. He saves it and piddles once he gets in? So today weve taken his old pee pad and pinned it to the decking outside in the hope he will sniff his scent and get used to peeing there.

another issue weve got is on a night time. Im soo tired lol! I know its all normal and to be expected tho. First few nights he slept in a cage but he cried for about 5 hours off the trott. I have a baby so cant let him cry too long or it wakes him up. So after a fw days we let him out of his cage and realised he slept in the corner of the kitchen so we just put his bed in the corner and let him sleep there with a baby gate at the door. Ive given him my blanket off the sofa, give him a hot water bottle, put classical music and left a dim light on. Some nights he will sleep good and others not. Last night he went happily to bed at 10 - 5.30 but the night before he was barking at 1.30. How do I get him to sleep consistently for longer?? 5.30 wake ups are killing me lol.

Ive went back to work today and he was alone for 5 hrs and then i came home at lunch and let him out n then another 3 hours. He seemed fine - nothing chewed and i think he more or less slept most of the time!!

Anyway I love him lots. Hes a great family pet. My son adores him and theyre a right pair!!

Any advice would be great thanks x

You do realise its against the law not to show us a picture of Yogi Laughing Laughing

Sounds like you're on top of things, yes the lack of sleep is a bit of a nightmare but most of the time it's short lived. 5.30 wake-ups are good at his age, count yourself lucky!

Puppy pads give mixed messages to a puppy so you need to scrap them. Decide on a 'trigger' word - for example I use 'tiddle' for my pups. Take Yogi outside and as he's having a pee use the trigger word - "Tiddle, good tiddle". Do it everytime until he associates the trigger word with the action. You'll eventually get the point where you can say the trigger word and he'll do it Smile You can do the same thing with poos.

At 9 weeks old he'll probably need to toilet in the night so that could be why he's waking you early in the morning. Make sure he goes last thing at night and if necessary set your alarm so you can let him out during the night.

In my opinion 5hrs is too long for a puppy of his age to be left on his own during the day. What do you do about his feeds as at his age he should still be having 4 a day? Isn't there anyone who could go and let him out during the day?

Hello and welcome. Yogi sounds a typical, gorgeous little pup and quite normal Very Happy Definitely need some photos to make sure though.....
I struggled at first trying to get photos on but if you put them into www.photobucket.com and then copy the link on here then they work quite nicely Very Happy Very Happy It took me a few attempts but it is not too difficult if you know your way around a computer

I dont no. Ive left him a few times for 3/4hrs at a time and he is fine. He will only be left 2 days a week which im happy that hell be ok.

Also, one more questions. How long to dogs normally sleep for? Like if he sleeps during the day when im out will he still sleeps at night. He gets up at 5.30/6 and has a good play and is in th garden. Then when we get in at 5 he gets another good play etc yet he dozes on an evening and im thinking should i keep him awake but he seems so tired bless him!!

Yogi is quite a little stunner!

Nothing really to add to what other people have said. We never used puppy pads with Max, just took him out regularly. Max was crate trained which I think helped with him getting house trained and he absolutely loved his crate.

Max has never really been left for long periods of time, especially when he was little but a lot of people on here have dogs who have been left alone a lot when they were young too who I'm sure will advise you more.

Good luck and I look forward to seeing more pics of the gorgeous Yogi!

He is gorgeous, looks like loads of fun. He'll be a great pal for your son.

Personally, I found that keeping puppies awake longer in the evenings does nothing to keep them in bed longer in the morning. He will be doing alot of growing soon.....ALOT of growing. So he'll need his golden sleep. Assuming he's still on four meals a day you'll start seeing a pattern of:

1 eating
2 playing / naughtiness
3 sleeping

On a perpetual loop. Let him sleep if you have no other plans for him, and enjoy the peace and quiet while you can.
