Well it's official....Charlie hates his crate!!!! We've had him 3 and a half weeks now, and some nights he sleeps through without a peep until sometimes 4am or 5am, And some nights he cries and barks all night long, now we can put up with it as he is our puppy and we love him to bits I'm just worried about the neighbours.

He has two small sores on his mouth off chewing the crate wanting to be out Crying or Very sad which the vet said were fine and just to keep an eye on them. I hate to think of him being sad and lonely whilst were in bed.

We've tried every trick in the book, kongs, hot water bottle, ticking clock, clothes that smell like us, leaving the light on and some nights he still cries all night.

I emailed the breeder and she said to try him out of the crate, maybe leaving the crate door open, but I don't know whether I can trust him in the kitchen all night??

I know its not because he has had enough sleep because this morning he woke up at 4am and I could hear him throwing himself at the crate door and crying so I gave in and came and got him and put him into bed with us (I know I shouldn't of done this Sad ) and he slept for three hours on the bed with us not a peep out of him.

He is only 10 weeks old, so is it probable that he will grow out of this and finally settle on a night??

Sorry for the long winded message Very Happy

xx

Ahh bless him.

I had one of my CoCo's pups returned to me at 8 weeks and he too now appears to 'hate the crate'.

I tried laying down on the floor by the crate within sniffing distance and pretended to sleep. after a while I fidgeted and when his little head stayed down I very quietly got up and went to bed.

Not sure if this will work for you but I think this little guy was just lonely as he had company all day.

His new mummy and daddy said that he settled well last night after using the pretend sleep trick.

Good luck and I hope some one has some better advice for you.

I can sympathise with you. Ebony is 4 months old and we have only had 1 night when she has slept for more than 7 hours and I have her Mum here!! She appears to be a very light sleeper, not like her Mum, any nightime noise sets her off and it is difficult to get her back to sleep. We have found that leaving the radio on has made a difference as she is much more settled when she can hear voices. Maybe worth a try. Both the dogs would much prefer to be with us at night, but that is not going to happen!!

Would it be an option to move the crate to your bedroom until he's a little bit older? Toby's nearly 8 months and I've got him in my room in his crate. He just likes to know there's someone there.

Thinking back to when he was your pup's age my Toby was in the kitchen but he had a puppy run attached to the crate so he could come out and snuffle about if he wanted to. Not sure if something like that might help.

When molly was a tiny pup she hated her crate the first few nights we tried to ignore but I to was worried about the neighbors. I then slept next to the crate for a week moving further and further away every eve she now loves her crate (not told her yet im going to start to de-crate her)

Charlie here has no crate either. He sleeps in the utility room and doesn't make any noise until around 6am when he needs to go to the toilet.

When he cried/cries, do you go and give him attention?

They aren't daft, dogs, you know. If he's starting to associate you giving him attention with the noise he makes...have you considered just leaving him to cry for a while?

Just saying...

Are you popping him out the toilet during the night?

Luna never got on with her crate until this year when Tucker has shown her they are comfy little dens! Very Happy She slept on the floor in my bedroom or on the bed peacefully and just slept when left for an hour or 2 alone loose in the 'safe' lounge from about 4/5months old.
