Both girls are currently on fish4dogs, which is think is really good for them, but they have put on weight. I have reduced their food even more but the portions are now pitiful.

I have to be a little bit careful about what I feed Cassie due to an unknown food allergy, Poppy so far can eat anything. But I like giving them a fish based diet.

So, can anyone think of a lower fat ( or senior) fish based food. I think I have alread tried Cass on JWB ocean fish and it made her itch.

Hi Rach

Last year when Pen's issues were put down to food my vet reommended Wafcol. I'm not sure if it's low fat but I've fed all of ours on both the Salmon and Potato and Ocean Fish and Corn with fab results.

I feed Penny on Arden Grange salmon and rice, 275g per day over 2 meals and she is keeping the weight off. Penny only has an occasional antos meaty bone and a couple of AG crunchy litebites max in a day as extras. I have found she looks so good on the salmon, and much better than when she had salmon oil added to a chicken or lamb based food.
Pen is 17 months old and is 31kg, but is not fat, she is chunky built but has a definite waist. Pen's poo's are always well formed and 2 max in a day. We do get out for about.two hours exercise a day.
We have recently looked at 'Orijen' and the 6 fish one, but decided "why?" as the AG suits her so well. If she does put weight on I might consider it.
Am interested myself to see what people think on this one.

Have a look at Skinners, they do a salmon and rice in the field and trial range http://www.skinnerspetfoods.co.uk/products/Field---Trial-Products/

TBH, lowering the fat content is not the answer. Dogs, unlike us, need the fat in their diets.

The way forward would be to make sure you are feeding less calories, so look at the calorie content of the food instead, but try and keep a good percentage of fat. May be a challenge!...

One sure-fire way of reducing calories is just to feed less, which you are doing. The portions may look pitiful to you but they are obviously more than ample if the dogs are not losing weight.

If your dogs are doing well on what they are being fed, I really wouldn't change, but I would continue to reduce the quantity.

Burns? That always seems to be low in calories, well mine can't maintain his weight even on the maximum on that anyway. There are a few fish based ones in the range and also the organic one which is high fibre and low calorie and fish based.

I've tried Cassie on both Burns and skinners before, but they made her scratch like crazy.

I see your point about just reducing the food they are on. They really do get small portions though Sad But it is a working dog food and the only work my girls do is in the tail department. My fault for buying it in the first place.

I too feed fish4dogs to my 2. My adult dog has gained quite a bit of weight, but her coat and general condition are great. How much do you feed? I have just reduced to 200g a day, 50g am and 150g pm. I do add some vegetables to pad it out a bit. The 4month old pup gets 405g a day over 3 meals. The lunchtime meal is slightly less than the other 2. She is growing very nicely and is a great shape. I am going to put her onto the adult variety shortly as we are almost at the end of the sack.
