Now that Charlie's brothers have gone home he is glued to me again! I noticed he has a cut on his back paw just below the nail. It is quite a wide slit. But it is not bleeding. He has been licking it a lot and whining while doing so. I washed it out and put a sock on him. I wouldn't say it will stay on too long! Is there anything else I should do? Do you guys think he needs a vet or should I just look after it myself? I will get a picture of it in the morning.

I managed Mischa's cut pad without visit to vet. I did same as you, cleaned it, [tried sock, but she was norty and kept taking it off Rolling Eyes ] and missed walks for a few days, just toilet breaks in the garden, then off lead walks on grass only, avoided gravely places and pavement walking, no ball chucking so no skidding, it was fine after about a week.

If it's not bleeding, then go with June's suggestion. It should soon get better Smile

Thanks guys! He has a bit of a limp so I will keep him in with no walks. Maybe we will go over to the grass to play later.

And yes the sock was gone this morning Laughing

Here is a picture of it..

Eeew that is quite a big opening, try to avoid letting him do to much on it Sarah for a few days, and clean after he's been out, Mischa's was not as wide. If he's limping just do the toilet break.

I'm not an expert but if that was Toby's paw I'd want the vet to put a stitch in it. Poor Charlie Sad

Or glue it or bandage it or something.

Hya

Coopers paw is similar, but its on the mainpad of his front paw and has split the whole width of the pad, and it was deep, right through the whole depth of the pad.
We took him to the vet, who put him on anti biotics and bandaged. The vet said it needs a stitch but it was too wide for the edges to come and stay together.

we have had 2 banadage changes, and they keep falling off him, so vet was happy on our last check up to leave that off, and just to make sure its kept clean, by bathing it in cooled boiling water and then pat drying it as best you can. You want it to stay as clean and as dry as possible.
Keep an eye to make sure it doesnt start oozing, or get smelly (which would be signs of infection).

but to try and keep him off it as best you can, no walks, just toilet trips.
try not to let him over lick it, as this could introduce bacteria into the wound, but over licking could delay the wound from scabbing over and healing. You wantit to scab over and start to knit itself back together and reharden.

hope he's ok.

As the others have said just keep it clean (salt water rinses) and keep an eye on it. Pads are really tricky; my vet won't stitch a pad unless it's really dire as he says he's seen it cause more problems than it solves over the years. Hopefully you'll find it heals up pretty quickly on it's own. X

Thanks for the help guys =) He is lying down now chewing on some toys so I will try to keep him quiet. Which means I cannot move Laughing He follows me everywhere.

His isn't deep at all it is just the width that worried me. I will go get some bandages to put on it because he is constantly licking it.

You could try putting a baby sock on it kept in place with a bit of micropore tape. I had to do this with Harry when he got into a habit of chewing his one foot and amazingly it stayed on!
