I have felt the same about one of mine ... Bentley is on a good food, fit and healthy .... but stroke him, then smell your hand and he stinks.
Morgan, his Son, fed exactly the same, has a longer coat .... stroke him, smell your hand and ..... nothing! Its weird .... but nothing I can do about it. It's just one of those things I think.
You open a can of worms when you ask people to recommend a good food, everyone has their own preference (for me it is Burns). If you do change, do it slowly over a number of days, just mixing a little of the new stuff in with the old to start with and gradually increasing the new whilst reducing the old. Be sure not to overfeed though as better quality foods usually need smaller quantities, overfeeding can cause fat dogs and a few undesirable effects of its own (eg wind, diarrhoea, skin problems).
Coco will be having a bath today - just to appease OH, but I need to buy her some more shampoo first. I have also washed all her bedding so the doggy smell doesn't transfer from there.
When I got Shadow about 6 weeks ago she smelt absolutely terrible and was moulting terribly. Stroke her and a handful of hair would come out in your hand. The house smelt awful and I have to drive with the window down in my car when she's in it.
I know it isn't a long term solution, but I have bathed her 4 times since I got her, first when I collected her and then every 2 weeks. I also brush her every 2nd day for a few minutes. Each time I bath her, I also wash all her bedding.
She is being fed Burns and I have started giving her Omega 3&6 supplements. Her coat is slowly coming right and the smell is slowly getting better. If she is still smelly after another 6 weeks, I may consider changing her food, although I am reluctant to go this route as the food otherwise seems to agree with her.
Persevere and hopefully you will find a solution that works for you.
