What a great way to see out 2011 and welcome 2012 my 3yr old daughter has Chicken pox. She got up yesterday morning with 2 spots but I wasnt sure what it was so called out of hours GP to ask what it might be. They said it sounds like chicken pox but they wanted to see her to make sure so I had to take her to the out of hours place which is in the hospital. I did question this as if it was chicken pox she shouldnt be around babies, older people, anyone who is ill (such as chemo) or anyone whos pregnant. But the nurse on the phone said its ok just bring her in. So off i go with Megan, Megan told the reception that shes got chicken pox, but they just said owww never mind go and sit down. In the waiting area there were 2 pregnant ladies and a tiny baby. I kept her on my knee and as far away from everyone as poss but thats not easy in a small room, and i couldnt wait outside the room as she would still be near people. We were called after an hour. It was on her notes that shes got poss chicken pox as the doc didnt ask what was wrong with her. He took 1 look at the spots and said "yes its chicken pox, you shouldnt of come here with sick people" I explained that I did ask the nurse if we were ok to come and they said yes just come down and reception knew. He made me feel really small.
Shes not been to bad with them so far, she went ot bed with a few and got up with lots and more have come through the day. They are just starting to get itchy so its cream and bed for megan as i think its going to be a long night.
I not sure what im supposed to do as the doc said Megan must not go out at all where there will be people.

Poor thing, if she is itchy a cool bath is recommended. If you get an old pair of tight, chop one leg off and put some porridge oats in it, tie a knot in the tights and soak in the bath water. This makes the water go milky and helps with the itching. Calamine lotion is also good
Try not to let her scratch as it does leave scarrring.
I suffer with recurrent shingles and chickenpox and its difficult. You arent allowed to go near anyone until the last spot has scabbed over! As soon as they are scabbed your free to roam where you please!! It will be a difficult week or so! Some recover quicker some take longer. Keep checking her temp and keep her cool. Lots of lotion and cool baths. I know there is something you can put in baths for chickenpox but i cant remember what its called. Will do some research! She may need painkillers. Some people recommend antihistamines to stop itching but i never do and i would advise a doctor before doing that!!
Piriton syrup is really good, it helps to stop the itching and also sends children (and me) to sleep.
Try not to feel too bad about infecting other people, she has been infectious for over a week without you even knowing about it. The virus is spread by coughs and sneezes so just try to stay away from crowded places as much as possible in the next week or so.
I wouldn't worry about infecting other people, as she will have been infectious for a few days before the spots came out anyway. I don't think anyone else worries about isolating their children. I had a little boy covered in Chicken Pox behind me in the queue in Tesco last week and I've seen a fair few spotty children out and about lately. That's just the way it goes. You can't stop life until the spots clear up can you and you can't leave a child at home alone.
The cooler you can keep her skin, the less spots will appear. So if possible, strip her off and let her run about indoors with just the air next to her skin.
Poor you, what a horrible way to start the year. Witch Hazel is a natural product and good for helping to stop itching, you can buy it in a handy solid form called witch stick and rub it over the spots to sooth them.
Hope Megan doesn't suffer too much and as the others have said, plenty of ice cream! X
Thanks everyone, i think a cool bath and oats is going to be the next plan as shes just started to itch like mad due to having a nappy on for bedtime. I might just bite the bullet so to speak and let her sleep with no nappy if it means she will feel better. I think i have some which hazel in in the liquid form though so will use cottonwool to apply it. Im going to go and get some piriton tomorrow, I usualy have it in but i must of run out in the summer. The doc didnt give her anything at all. He just said dont let her scratch. Hello shes 3yr old if i say dont scratch shes still going to do it. I did get her some callomine with somthing else in it from the chemist and its kept in the fridge so its cold for her when i put it on. Shes had nothing on all day just her knickers to try and keep her cool. She did go to bed about 1h ago but shes still up and down.
Oh and of course I will get the icecream tomorrow morning. Typical as shes due back at nursery on wed, I dont think she will be going for a couple of weeks. Lets hope Cody doesnt get them untill shes over them and back at school 2 ill kids is not easy on your own
AWW that really is tough on you!!!!!( not meant in a nasty way ) Really hope Cody doesnt get it but is more likely to get it!! At least it gets it over and done with!!
Ice cream is amazing for poorly kids helps mum too
When I was a kid ( very many moons ago) we all had measles/ chickenpox parties to make sure we all had it about the same time
