My understanding of 'Meal' was exactly the same as Coco-loco that it was the more concentrated version of the meat ie already dried, so that in Arden Grange there is a min of 27% meat in the food. If it was described as fresh then it would be with the water still in it.

One of the regulatory boards for dog food AAFCO, state that

"Poultry meal is the dry rendered product from a combination of clean flesh and skin with or without accompanying bone, derived from the parts of whole carcasses of poultry or a combination thereof, exclusive (ie without) of feathers, heads, feet, and entrails. It shall be suitable for use in animal food. If it bears a name descriptive of its kind, it must correspond thereto."

* Contributes a more concentrated amount of animal protein to a product since it contains only about 10% moisture, making the food more species appropriate. * No limit on the amount that can be used in a food formula, which permits the creation of high-protein, low-carb dry foods.

To be honest, I dont think any company for whatever food keeps their ingredients the same for years and years, even big very old companies like Hovis make tweaks to their recipe over time. Rules and regulations regarding labelling change over time and people are becoming more label aware, I know I have. Ultimately we just have to find a food that we are happy with ingredients and money wise and most importantly one that suits our dog.

Interesting to find out about other foods that Ive not really looked into much before though.

As we look after huskies on patrols and police/ prison dogs we have to keep our formulas the same.
I think it is progress when they do change them but the fact they refuse to tell anyone is the problem. Just change and wait for owners to find out.

I have had another moderator e mail saying they are deleting posts for advertising. Can I point out this link has been educational for us all and I am not forcing our food or any other foods or advertising the fact.
I have 27 content dogs so of course I would favor it but I am more interested in bringing some of these dog food companies making false claims to the surface.
The company I am with has an advertising budget worldwide and I look after the uk and USA. If they need to advertise they have an advertising dept. this is me, from home, privately uncovering and hopefully helping.
Please do not tell me this is a site where you are controlled as to what you are allowed to read as I joined with an open mind and have been very encouraged by the content.

This whole thread has been nothing but advertising - the feed that you're involved with and trying to market, is a good feed but it's not exceptional. It contains good but also 'fillers' ingredients - I know the whole range very well as I was the UK importer of it before your boss took over the rights. The UK produced, premium feeds are all just as good now or even better and many have the advantage of now being VAT free as they're also covering the working/active dogs market.

The biggest problem with the dry foods is not so much when they change the recipe but the actual quality of the raw materials that are used - that can of course be controlled to a certain extent by the manufactures buying in the highest quality of lets say rice but even the high quality raw materials may vary. I specifically remember one episode where a manufacture changed it's supplier of a specific raw material and the customer's dogs started to experience that their dogs went 'loose' - on paper the analysis of the raw material was exactly the same but in reality the quality wasn't. I couldn't quiet understand that it could mean that much at the time and felt a bit silly explaining this to my customers (sounded a bit like a bad excuse) but since then having had very close relations to a manager of a company that supplies raw materials (like rice) to Skinners, James Wellbeloved and others I know that when the containers with rice are opened there is a huge difference - for a start it never comes from the same countries so the whole growing processes vary - things like spraying and what types of chemicals that may have been used.

Fact is there are so many things that are beyond control in our pet food industry and also in our human food industry because it's all down to big margins, product price, availability and convenience.

Wainwrights contains no fish but salmon protein which is basically made from fish by products and is a golden acre feed .

I just looked at the Wainwright's bag and it actually says "Salmon 24%" as the first ingredient, then further down the list of ingredients it also includes "Fish Meal 10%min" as well. So when they say it includes salmon, are they lying? I don't understand the science of it, just assume that what is says on the bag is what we get?
