They are a worry!

I think unless it is really deep they'll probably not stitch.. or staple I think when it is pads as pad is thick. They may well want to leave it open for yucky stuff to drain as well - yuck!

I hope this is what has been causing limping Confused because if it is once healed is once sorted Very Happy

Tucker's did heal pretty quickly and did come seemingly out of nowhere too.

Get better quick Cooper!

I have used Sudocrem on Barney's foot when it has been split before and it does seem to help it heal. The vet told me that it would be OK if he licked it with the cream on.

We have used Sudocrem for years now (it is suitable for nappy rash, burns etc), for various injuries etc. It is so good it is known as the "magic cream" in our house (named by our lads when they were little).

If you happen to have any in the house you could use and then put a sock over the top to stop it going on carpets etc when Cooper walks around.

Hope he feels better soon, a split pad like that must be really uncomfortable.

Just to add to other advice, when Mischa had split pad, apart from keeping it clean we canceled walks for a few days, just toilet breaks in the garden, then when we started walks again kept to grassy areas and avoided gravelly areas and hooleys until it was healed.

Sounds so familiar. Max has had similar problems for months now. We had the X-rays done etc and no joint problems at all, no breaks - thought it was tendon (his foot went down a well hidden, deep rabbit hole).

He would stop limping after a few weeks but then do something stupid like bum tuck around garden for no reason Rolling Eyes even for a few seconds before he was stopped, and it would start off again.

He was great around October/November and hadnt limped for a while and was even limpless for weeks after a NE training day of full on retrieving.

Over the months we narrowed it down to two outside toes (which do get cracked) but I put on vaseline occasionally - especially with the frost and ice we had a while ago. Xmas Eve he started the limp again Rolling Eyes and it was something totally silly - but we went to vet and he saw a slight bit of redness between nail and pad (where there has been a gap for some time) got some anti-bi's and metacam and within 24 hrs limp totally gone and 48 hrs small red area totally gone. Shocked We'll just have to keep an eye on that gap between nail and pad more closely - caused no doubt originally by some full pelt twisting/turning or something on the ground.

They love to keep us on OUR toes Very Happy and I hope Cooper is better soon.

When Ruby scuffed her pad my vet suggested bathing it in some hibiscrub diluted in water to keep it clean. My vet gave me some from the surgery but I think you can buy it online too.

We swear by peroxide in our house, absolutely brilliant antiseptic. If you dab it on neat it bubbles, which brings out any dirt or infection, you can actually see the dirt coming out, they used it on my daughters knee at hospital A&E to remove gravel when she took the skin off after falling in the road, brilliant stuff. I dilute it to gargle with for sore throats and I've used it as a mouthwash as well.

For a dogs paw I would use 1 teaspoon peroxide and 1 of water dab it on with a cotton bud so it goes into the wound wait for it to bubble to get it clean then leave for couple of hours then get a bowl with cooled boiled water and with salt in stick his foot in soak it for a couple of minutes, that will also keep it clean. If you did the salt wash 4 or 5 times during the day you may not need the vets unless of course it needs stitching. Don't know if sudocrem would attract dirt cause of the grease, metamium might be better cause its a dry barrier cream nothing gets through that.
Hope it gets better soon

We took him to vets this evening, and I so wish I hadn't bothered. I'm really annoyed with myself.
Basically vet said as you all did, that we needed to keep it clean and it was too wide a split to stitch and that it would just need to heal on its own.

He got the nurse in to bandage it and put a cone on him to stop him chewing the bandage. Gave us ab's and said to go back for bandage change on saturday.

Well we walked him from car in drive into the house and the bandage has fallen off. Cooper didn't touch it, it just slipped off! (confident in her bandage the nurse said she was, didn't need tape she said!)

Grrr so £89 later, and we are exactly as we have been for last couple of days plus some ab's!
Oh and another appointment tomorrow to put another bandage on!

Ooh, I could shake myself!
Sorry, had to vent.

Anti bs and consultation cost - fair one, you've been reassured as to the treatment needed.

Take the cone and bandages back and ask to be refunded as they aren't needed!

EIGHTY NINE POUNDS!!!!! Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked
That is a ridiculous cost!

Yeah I'm gonna cancel bandage appointments tomorrow. Maybe we will get some money back for the cone and bandage.

I know, at least he is insured but still. Beggars belief how they come to their charges!
