Thanks Jules, i'll keep an eye on them, they don't look underweight though Smile

Can you get close enough to feel them, Lacey, as a thick winter coat can hide just how thin a pony actually is underneath?

If they aren't being seen to daily, then they are probably better off without rugs, as straps come undone and legs get caught in them all too easily.

In the riding school there are some horses with rugs and some not with rugs. Athough they have shelter. But the ponies grow a much thicker, fluffier coat than the horses! Most of the bigger horses barely have a winter coat. They are all rugged up. There is one fat pony who is not rugged and obviously does not need to be. He looks even fatter with all that hair!

He went through last winter with no rug and was fine. He was also in a field with no built shelter but he had the trees and bushes.

Here is the little cutey!

If it is really cold they will grow a nice, thick coat. Some of the ponies were clipped here just last month and now they look like they have not been cipped at all Shocked They grew their coat back very fast.

ohh that looks very much like the 4 i'm talking about... Theres one that colour and the other 3 are all different but not as big as that one. I'm glad to hear they dont all need built shelter. I can't reach them jules and they don't seem too interested in humans like the other horses who come straight to the fence to say hello... These 4 just ignore us.

As long as they don't have to constantly stand in wet mud, they should be fine. Most gateways, around water troughs, etc, get squishy in the winter. They just need somewhere to stand and lay where it isn't so wet.

They look like they have a good amount of hay there and that will keep them warm, along with their thick oily coats. So for now, I'd just keep an eye on the state of that field.
