Sadly this doesnt astound me - having worked with unscrupulous vets and also with recent encountersI have very little faith in trusting my own vets.

I think the big shame is that the vet is not giving all the advice they should be - so the owner can make an informed decision.

Slightly playing devils advocate here - but Di is not paid to give the advice that she has - ie she has no financial gain out of giving on all round piece of advice. Mismate has its pitfalls, as does spaying (which I am not opposed but does have the risk with G/A, internal bleeding can occur) along with the pitfalls of losing a bitch during a whelp or c-section, or post whelp.

The lady asking for advice from Di is lucky to have been given every bit of advice (from Di). Yet the VET who IS the person most people trust and turn to for guidance in pet health care has let her down, the vet is being a numpty as he should be giving every element of advice that this lady will have paid for.... so thank god this lady DOES have Di to turn to further advice.

(irrespective of the decision being mismate or spay etc...this is more about an owner being able to make an informed decision).

I hope this meets a happy resolve with the bitch and owner.

Thats exactly right Heidi... he should of given a full crosssection of options. It was being so dismissive, whilst not exactly shocking me as I know vets often know little about breeding, but his dismissive casual attitude about just 'suck it and see'! Just thought i'd share incase anyone else encounters the same sort of thing....

I have, on one occasion had to use the jab due to a rather manky collie, owned by a local farmer being allowed to just go where he likes. He was very crafty! luckily with no ill effects. My vet would never have had that what will be will be attitude, and although i would like to believe no vet would think this way i have to wonder [being a tad cynical] whether the fact that a nervous petowner with a litter would run up a rather large vet bill would have been any part of , or lack of the advice given. Hopefully the owner has acted upon decent advice given.

She has, having the mismate and obviously, crossing fingers for none of the nastier side effects to show, and a spay intended for Feb time (apparently - I can only go on what people tell me these are not close friends just friends of friends).

I think the mismate has to be viewed like the Morning After Pill for humans. Weighing everything up, very glad its there in the background for once in a lifetime type emergencies, but never to be used as a 'form of contraception'. But I appreciate others negative feelings towards it are based in real concerns too.

But are they based on their own experience, or hearsay? I know plenty pf people, including myself, who have used it with no ill effect (okay, used later on in a pregnancy it's not nice, but still better in most instances than rearing unwanted-for-whatever-reason puppies, yet the perception seems to hang on in there that it's a 'bad thing'.

Why?

I think Jill expressed that she had a bitch who developed pyo as a result a few years ago, so naturally she is dubious about it.... but I do, yes, agree Fiona.... people do listen to one bad story from thousands of admisters and tend to dwell on it. But I do understand if its affected someone personally being very cautious and 'anti'.

I think its like a lot of things, I have used it more times than i would probably be proud to admit over the last 18/19 years with no side effects at all except a little sickness on one occasion. Infact to be fair, most kennels who own both sexes that I have ever known have used it or gone along with the 'whoops' at various times, so its very common and you only hear of tragedies once in a very blue moon. However of course its not something many publicise as its always linked to a failure in routine or management which none of us like to own up to willingly WinkWink

But then some dismiss premate testing because they used it and their bitch missed still, and they blame the premate, forgetting the hundreds of bitches who take a year because of using them, so its easy for folks to jump to conclusions on things rather fast, its true, sometimes, as you say, in my opinion.
