....who needs enemies!
A young Labrador bitch, taken in to their vets having been mismated. 13 months old and completely unhealthtested in the hands of a busy young family pet home.
Lady came to me asking advice having had a mismating with her mothers dog not realising quite how seasons work! I suggested the mismate injection, she was happy to use it (thank goodness) and off she goes on friday to the vets.
Large practice, some nationalwide surgical proceedures carried out there with referrals from all round the country. vet said 'I would advise you really just go ahead with the possible pregnancy, you really don't want to be messing around with the mismate jab, there are side effects that can be nasty, after all she may not be pregnant...'
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There may be, but so are there for pregnancy whelping and raising a litter..... and anyway, you are a VET! If YOU can't help people do the right thing who on earth can???
Sigh and bumps head against wall.
The lady came away without but is going back today to insist.
My own vets are fantastic so I am not into vet knocking, but this one took my breath away, because vets can be SO influential to owners

Well I'm probably going to come at this from a slightly different angle because I'm not keen on the mismate jab and the side effects associated with it and chose not to use it. Although in a slightly different situation as all health tests were in place and the mating was planned just later...........................
So I'm sort of with the vet on no mismate (which may go against the grain on here, but I'm my own person ) but as she belongs to "a busy young pet home" a spay should have been offered to solve the problem once and for all.
Jill, totally agree, noone should use the mismate lightly. I do agree. Although having used it a few times over the years and known many who have you do rarely see the scarey side effects talked of. Bit of sickness, an elongated season and a possible jumble to the cycle for the next season, throwing out her dates tends to be the worst that can happen. But I so respect those who avoid it like the plague..... you wouldn't be the only one. I agree if this was a planned mating just a season too early and a respectable age i'd not use it either all else considered.
I sort of always think if you read the leaflet in a box of paracetamol you wouldn't take them, but again, I agree, a spay was discussed too, and certainly was a possibility, but at this time of year it was not a good calm recovery time for the bitch afterwards with the 3 young kids off school and hyped to screaming point.... so the mismate was considered (it was her first season), then a spay in the spring next year.
Damn vet though for being so irresponsible in these circumstances. The problem to me is that this woman is exactly the sort of person who both should not breed as they don't want to, nor planned to, nor have the time to.... and that should be exactly the sort of person vets should be encouraging to be responsible even after the horse has bolted. Grrrr!!!
Its easy to talk someone INTO having puppies but much harder to talk them out of it if they have an opening to do so.

Disgusted by that. Give the owners the information, yes, but then it's up to them.
I know of a case where a vet apparently did the same thing, but this time to a 7 month old staffy pregnant by a large crossbreed dog
With mismate, I think a lot depends on whether the bitch is earmakred as a valuable breeding bitch in the future with regards the side effects. A question of mine, would it not be better to spay rather than mismate in such circumstances if there are no plans to breed in the future?
I don't think you can leave out the higher risk of Pyometra which is not just a minor side effect!! I nearly lost a Weimy bitch with it in the past(not from the mismate jab) and it is to be taken very seriously.
To my mind anyone who puts having "a nice busy Christmas"above there bitches life is more to blame than the vet who has obviously had some bad experiences with Mismate (and that's from someone who is not always in favour of some vets actions} .
Spay all the way as far as I am concerned, especially with irresponsible owners!!
