Maybe even though she has a dog flap she doesn't want to go outside because its scary in the dark? That might sound odd but if she has been out alone and saw a fox or heard a siren or something that seemed spooky to her that might have affected her confidence and she now wants you to come and check its ok because you make her feel safe.

My Sam likes his crate if left out he doesn't sleep he likes to be put to bed in his crate even though he doesn't need to be shut in there could you try putting the crate back up in the room she's in and covering it as well as putting bedding in and then leave it open and see if she goes in there she'd have a choice.

Could you change her sleeping room in case it is noises that are disturbing her or if you'd rather she stayed in that room try children's nightlight and or the radio on low or tv on a news channel to cover other noises, stop it being pitch black and make her feel like there's 'someone' around rather than silence.

Do you leave her something to do if she wakes up if not something she can amuse herself with (and practice this in the day directing her to it whilst you concentrate on something else) e.g. a 'big dog' nylabone to chew.

It might be worth going outside with her to see if she does need the toilet, but is just to frightened to go out there by herself. I always give Shadow and Bella a couple of biscuits at bedtime to see them through (not that it works with Bella at the moment Rolling Eyes ).

Bella is now 8 months old and over the last week or two I have noticed her becoming more whiney and demanding. I don't know if this is a stage or if she will soon be coming into season, but I certainly hope it isn't going to be a permanent feature Shocked Laughing

Could you have a cat invading your dog flap?
Could the wind have blown it and spooked her in those gales last week if this is a new behaviour?
Keep a look out for any indications she's coming into season - she could be more clingy due to hormonal changes. You may want to restrict access to the dog flap when she is in season too as it is surprising the lengths some males will go to to reach an inseason girl and she'll go inviting and searching for him at a certain time of the season!

I have had a cat in my conservatory as I use the flap for the tumble dryer hose I thought one couldn't squeeze past! Forunately there was a whole room between the dogs and the cat so they were unaware it was having a snooze on the sofa in the conservatory! Lucky cat!

Success! We took some advise from everyone and she slept in till 6:30am. It did feel a little chilly in the kitchen last night so we gave Maisy an old double duvet to snugggle into and a large bonio biscuit when she went to bed and this seems to have done the trick.

Our Garden is totally enclosed and we don't have foxes in Guernsey so I'm not so sure anything outside was bothering her. But quite rightly the dog flap can open if the wind picks up like it has recently.

Maisy has never liked her crate and has always preferred an open dog bed. For many months she had the option of both and always went for the bed instead of the crate that's why we ditched it.

With regard to the exercise duration, carlajay, I have read so many different articles and researched this quite a bit. There is so much conflicting advise I try and take the common sense approach. Maisy has a small garden and does not get much exercise whilst I am at work. I feel that a morning walk and an evening walk for 35mins each time is about right. We have a bit of playtime and training at lunch time but that is it.

Laura, thanks for the advise on looking out for her coming into season.

Thanks everyone for you advice.

Grant
