Hello all

We have just been to the beach with cooper and our friend with her ridgeback. They were both racing round playing for a good hour.
Got him home and he had some water then flaked out for bout 20mins but then vomited up a large amount of water.

He's looking very sorry for himself, and has since vomited more watery stuff(more yellow this time).
He did go in a hole on beach filled with sea water that he drank a bit of.

Could it be just the excitement and exertion or the salt water or both?

Shall I just give him some ice cubes to keep him hydrated or should he have a little food to line his stomach?

Thabks

I expect he has drunk a load of salty water and wouldn't actually worry too much. I wouldn't give him anything until he has not vomited for about an hour at least. Then personally my route on this is to offer a half portion of normal kibble soaked with boiling water....and cooled obviously to 'warm to touch'. Then give that 2 hours.... if he scoffs it and that stays down give him the other half as normal about 2 hours after that. If he scoffs THAT and THAT stays down then from tomorrow feed normally. Any variation of that play by ear but chances are once he gets it out his system he will be fine....

Good luck
Di

Added to what Di has said, I think I would give him some water to drink now, small amounts, it will reduce the affects of the saline [sea water] and keep an eye on him.

If he has drunk a lot of sea water it can cause problems, but if he is not lethargic after a few hours then hopefully it will all be out of his system, it can cause dehydration.

June

Thanks June,
He is dozing now, but definitely not right. Will try and get him to drink a little.
I didnt see him drink that much salt water, so hopefully he will be back to normal soon.

He was having such a fab time, just a shame he's feeling so rotten now, hope he doesn't associate his hooly at the beach with feeling rubbish. Sad

He may just be knackered too remember. I'd give it till about 5pm for him to kip, then get him up and see if he fancies some tea. You never know might be coincidence, he was about to be hit by some bug but threw it off whilst he had such fun.

I've found if you don't have puppy milk replacement powder (and why would you!! Wink ) then hot water, with a splash of human milk with loads of either gloucose powder or white sugar in it is great for restoring them. Just an inch in a bowl.

My 'emergency food' if you end up going more than a day without him eating is usually scrambled eggs (no milk) in the microwave with loads of glucos or sugar beaten in and cooled.

Thank you Di,
I just tried him with a bit of soaked kibble and he wasn't interested. So will leave it now until his supper and see how he feels bout some milk like you said.
We r having fish for tea so I might try him with a bit of that.

Hope he feels better soon.

I remember someone's dog feeling very poorly after a visit to the beach the reason became evident when all the sand re-emerged in poop Shocked

I didn't even think about the sand!
Well he had some milk and took his milk bone to bed with him which is where he is snoring away now.

Hopefully all will be well tomorrow.
