Got to defrost my freezer in the near future. Question, has anybody used any of the defrost sprays that are on the market now? Do they really work, or waste of money?

Regards, John

Do you by any chance have one of those steam cleaners John?, if so use that, be careful of any small pipes that may be in your freezer (depending on its age, I think they are hidden away these days), they do a great job and in next to no time, so, your food isn`t out for longer than is necassary.

I havn`t tried any of the defrost sprays so can`t comment on tose, sorry.

Brilliant question. I was just thinking this earlier as I pushed, shoved and finally kicked the 'bone drawer' shut. I do have a steam cleaner, but can someone else go first please and let me know how they get on Wink ...

I defrosted my freezer yesterday. I use a hair dryer to speed up the process. Obviously I make sure no water gets on it, but it gets the job done in a fraction of the time. Very Happy

That's a job I need to do this weekend......but I've just put my Xmas roast in there. Not the smartest move Rolling Eyes

All this talk of hairdryers has given me an ace idea. I have a little device called an "Embossing Heat Gun" (the crafters will understand). Hotter than the surface of the sun when it gets going, but will the lame puff of hot air it exudes be enough to reach the freezer from a safe distance.

As for getting my husband to do it. FAT CHANCE! It has been his "turn" to do it about 15 defrosts ago. This time I have tried to leave it as long as possible before giving in, but its getting to the point where its a matter of days before the fourth and final drawer freezes shut.

Ooo and another tip. Wear a pair of warm gloves underneath a "too big" pair of rubber gloves while handling all the frozen food.

I don't know why I didn't think of it before, as I hate getting such cold fingers (I have Raynaud's so it gets quite painful). I tried it yesterday and my fingers stayed nice and warm and I didn't get random frozen peas stuck to my skin either Mr. Green.

No, dont have a steam cleaner, and as to hair dryers, as I dont have much hair I've no need for one of them!! So my usual tactic is bowls of hot water. Looked at several sites and see recommendations ranging from 1 star useless to 5 stars wonderful all for the same spray product, so it's rather inconclusive.

Regards, John

We put boiling water from the kettle into bowls then stand these in the freezer
and shut the door/drawer and leave for a bit. Makes it easier to chip off chunks
of the thick frost.
You do have to renew the boiling water of course but it does work but maybe not as quickly as the hairdryer method!
Good tip about the gloves, Jules.
