Hello, I'm new to the forum as I've just adopted a 17 month old black labrador who was withdrawn from Hearing Dogs on health grounds.
Unfortunately, Hearing dogs haven't got a record of his registered name as they didn't take him on for breeding.
I know this is a long shot, but I'm tryng to find out his registered name partly because I would like to know his pedigree, but also because he has been diagnosed with inheritted bi-lateral posterior polar subcapsular cateracts (PPSC). Since this is an inheritted form of cataracts, if I knew his pedigree, I could perhaps inform the kennel club etc so they could let owners of his siblings be aware to have their dogs checked also.
The only information I have about him is, that his pet name is Harry (not sure if this was named by breeder or by hearing dogs), he was taken on as a puppy by hearing dogs along with a male sibling and he was born on 24th June 2010. I also have his microchip number, but he was only registered as 'Harry' with this.
He is a lovely dog and if I can't find his name / pedigree it doesn't matter, but if anyone knows of a litter born on this date (I'm sure there are many) and where at least two puppies went to hearing dogs, I would very much apprieciate it if you could share any informaton you have.
Thanks,
Oliver

It seems suprising that Hearing Dogs don't know what litter he came from, who the breeder was or the parents I would have expected them to keep a record of every dog that came in! I hope someone can help you out, well done for taking him on I'm sure he's going to be a fab addition to your household. We love to see some pics of him!
I believe that they saw his registration when they got him, but as he wasn't going to be used for breeding, they didn't keep it.
They do have his breeder on record, but are unable to tell me the details due to data protection, which is fair enough.
I guess they have better things to be doing than trying to contact the breeder themselves who also may not remember which dog went to hearing dogs etc.
It's not a great concern to me if I am unable to find out his pedigree, but it would be nice to know all the same.
Having worked at Hearing Dogs in the past I would suggest that the only thing you can do is send a letter to the breeder via Hearing Dogs for them to forward.
As you say everything will be in there records but they cannot release it to you. There is nothing to stop them forwarding a letter though.
Thanks for your ideas,
From the things I've read on the internet, there were multiple labrador litters born on 24/06/2010, so unless his breeder or someone who knows them is on this forum, then my idea for finding a litter or two born on that day and contacting them to see if they remember a dog going to hearing dogs is rather remote.
I think your idea of a letter is good and certainly not something I would have thought of but as I've already asked for his name twice, I'll have to think about how to word a letter so I don't seem too pushy about it.
If he has been eye tested then the KC will already know, because they are automatically notified of all test results. I would also say that the Hearing Dogs would know the full registration because they would have used it for getting the dog tested. It's just that they are not passing it on to you, which is quite normal.
Obviously being born in June last year he would have been tested sometime this year, and I dont have the eye test results for this year yet so cannot help. But even then it would be like a needle in a haystack. I think your chances on finding anything are slim to zero.
Yes he was tested by the eye specialist his years on 19/10/2011.
Since his microchip has had the details updated so that Katherine and I are his new owners, I might see if I can contact the vet who tested him as presumably they will have had his details to notify the kennel club.
If they can see that we now own him from his micochip, prehaps they will allow us to see his medical records and hence his name.
Thanks for all your help with this.
If I don't get any further on this line, when are you likely to see 2011's eye results? and would the date tested by of any benefit.
I may well buy the hip and eye databases Ollie, but it wont be until Crufts in March.
But more important for you, has anyone mentioned the possibility of him going blind? Most Posterior Polar cataracts do not progress, or progress very slowly, and can safely be ignored. But something like 5% do progress to total blindness. These can be operated on but it's a more difficult procedure than in humans, which makes it a very expensive procedure.
From your point of view, because the condition was known about before you acquired the dog it would be a "Pre existing" condition so would not be covered by insurance. I know that in the past the Hearing Dogs have agreed to cover the cost of cataract removal, so would suggest you talk to them about this. I'd also suggest you get his eyes tested again, possibly a year after the original test, this will help you to understand whether the cataracts are advancing or not. If you like to let me know your rough location I might well be able to point you in the direction of a specialist who will be able to test him. (It's not a job for a normal vet.) (I suspect you might be in my area.)
I see you have used up all your free posts, so if you want to talk further about this you can email me on j_weller@btinternet.com

Well I had a response from the specialist who assessed his eyes but she said that she examined him as a clinical patient rather than during as an eye test for breeding (since he was in training not a potential stud dog) and as such he did not have an official certificate just the report which we already have.
Over Christmas, Katherine's father (John Wellings, who apparently knows a few of you on here) suggested searching the breed record supplements for Harry's date of birth. After eliminating some, this produced a list of 42 possible puppies. Now just a case of eliminating 41 more of them - a lot easier said than done, but I like a challenge, hence why I'm continuing the search.
