Hi there Lab lovers,

I have recently become the proud owner of a gorgeously leggy (hence the name Basil!) black lab. Hes the 1st that i have had having previously had an angel of a cocker spaniel. They couldnt be further apart personality wise as my cocker was very ready to please all the time and basil seems to be incredibly indifferent with me and OH but extra happy to see anyone else. Kinda upsetting Any advice to get him to love me a bit more would be great, in fact any advice of the sort relating to the breed would be fab. Hes 16 weeks and weve had him since 14 weeks.

Look forward to all your words of experience and wisdom

Leanne and Basil

Hi and welcome to you and Basil, as you`ve only had him a couple of weeks and fairly late on for a pup, you need to give him time to get used to you and learn your routine.

Spend as much time with him teaching him things, start simply with thigs like sit, lie, give paw and so on.

Labs are known for their eagerness to please so its a little surprising he doesn`t seem to be interested, do you know anything about his past history or have you got him from a rescue centre?

Hes from a pet shop :s which wouldnt have beenmy choicebut i happened to be in there giving him a cuddle and cooing when my other half called me and went there after work and bought him. we recently lost our cocker in a dog attack and i have obviously been down about it and he bought him cos he said i sounded happier than i had been in weeks. Bless!!

I think hes getting there with me. the toilet training is going well as is the crate training. he knows how to sit and lie down most of the time but hes not getting anywhere with his name Confused

I`m so sorry to hear Sasha`s story, its bad enough losing a much loved pet at anytime but in that manner must be so devastating.

Like I said, with Basil give him time, I thnk they dont so much learn their name but more the tone of your voice when you call/use it, it sounds as though he`s doing pretty well so far so keep persevering.

As for him not loving you, they don`t show emotions the way we do, that isn`t to say they don`t feel it because I believe they do BUT they don`t know about love and hate, to him your the one that cares for him and he`ll love you for that if nothing else, specially at meal times Laughing

I didnt have my lab till he was 16 weeks old he has been the easiest pup to house train and slept through the night from day one, he was strange for a few days ie didnt want his food and kept hiding under a weeping willow tree in the garden and taking his toys and hiding them under the tree but he s now 21 months and a joy to have. Have patience with him, be firm but kind and lots of praise and give him time it will pay in the end.

Good luck
Christine & Arley X

Don't worry about him blanking you or seeming uncaring, he's a toddler, possibly teething, and in a new place. But do make sure he's up to date on his vet visits as a pet shop isn't the ideal place to buy a dog and may need a little extra care if born in a puppy farm.

Even though we'd had our dog from 8 weeks, once he hit the "toddler" phase I used to get so jealous. I'd be with him all day, walking, training, playing, feeding, watering, clearing up his accidents and chewed bits of furniture, making icy teatowels for his teething. He basically treated me like he absolutely detested me. But as soon as OH came home from work there were tail wags, kisses, dancing round, bringing gifts of MY slippers to OH.

He loved everyone but me. Like a typical toddler.....testing the boundaries. Luckily I'd been through it before and knew that by 6 months I'd eventually love him and he'd love me Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

I dont think he is from a puppy farm as i have the names of mum and dad and they are kennel club registered but i am a little naive with these things! he has kennel cough which has been confirmed by vet but not given me anything for it just told to give him some warmed honey and lemon 3x day for the cough and come back in 3 weeks if its not better!

Well i'll just continue with the way im going then and hope that we get to 6 months QUICKLY!!!!! cos i want cuddles Sad

Don`t force him into cuddles, if he`d been in the pet shop since he was around 8 weeks old, he`ll have no idea of what cuddles and love is all about, something else for him to learn.

Once he starts the wait will have been oh so worth it, my CJ is fiercely independent and only gives "Mummy cuddles" on his terms but we both enjoy the moment when he decides to do it, even though its usually means I can`t use the laptop cos he`s got his head on it Laughing
