Success in trialling in many ways is down to how good you are. A good trainer/handler will do far better with a mediocre dog than say a beginner with the same dog. To my mind, the ftch part indicates that he had the combination of ability and good handler/trainer mixed with a bit of good fortune and hard work. It doesn't mean you will get the same!!!

The colour of the pedigree (reds being Ftch) is really not going to make a heck of a difference to you to begin with in all honesty. Like Mo says the learning curve is huge from the start. You will make a bunch of mistakes and probably "break" your first dog. But you will learn and as you go along, you will see dogs you like and work out which lines you like and then you will be able to take a more informed approach to which direction you would like to take with the breeding of your next dog!

Not to say you can't achieve with this pup, but its not just as easy as most people think Smile

If you think its something your really would be interested in, I would suggest trying to get onto a shoot as a beater this year, so you can see how it all works. The more you know about the ins and outs of whats expected on a shoot day the better. Try NOBS website, I'm sure I had an email from them looking for beaters recently not too far from you.

I'll echo Mo, knock the retrieving in for now, his teeth will start to come out soon and his mouth could be sore. Work on general obedience, recall and walking nicely to heel with no great seriousness, keep it all light and fun. Avoid playing tuggy games with him and discourage him from making noise.

Good luck. Smile

Hi there,

I would be more than happy to show you the ropes. I'm a bit busy with work and trailing at the moment, But if you would like to go beating or come out picking up with me you are more than welcome? all the shoots are near Stirling.

Wow! There's an offer for you! If you take my advice, leave your dog at home and take Lewis up on a day out accompanying him on a day picking up! Stirling is only around 25 miles from you and thats not as far as my shoot is from me. It's a wonderful opportunity to see a good dog working and to see just what's required.

Regards, John
