For those of you with young male, unneutered cheeky monkeys.. I'm wondering whether Aero's (my 1 yr. old choccy male) excessive whiny-ness is due to being unneutered.. Mind you, it's not overly excessive, however my 4 yr. old yellow female hardly if ever whines at all so maybe I'm just not used to it lol!

Jessie's more of a people dog, and couldn't care less about other dogs.. But Aero? Even if he smells another dog who happened to have crossed our path moments earlier he'll whine.. He's a little social butterfly - he's more of a dog's dog than Jessie is.. And he's a playful, friendly little goofball.. He'll whine at me first thing in the morning when I'm having my tea because he's itching to get out there in the world.. He'll whine in the car when he knows we're going to hike at our favorite off-leash conservation area where he KNOWS he'll have some buddies there to terrorize lol...

Anyways just wanted to get your input about this.. Naive question I know, but do you believe neutering will stop Mr. Whiny Buckets from whining so much? Or do you think it could potentially make him worse, or even aggressive?

Thanks,
Leah Razz

Do you mean he just likes holding a conversation? If so then the answer is no, not a jot!

Castration of males will correct nothing which is not sex related, and dont let anyone, vets included, try to tell you otherwise!

Thats not to say that you should or should not have your dog castrated. That is your choice. Certainly in the days when I kept males they were all neutered. But unless you have a good reason I prefer about 18 months old before doing the deed.

Regards, John

I wouldn't say it's holding a conversation per se.. If it was it'd certainly be an anxious one! An anxious conversation, with no justifiable reason for the anxiety, is IMHO problematic.. He's displaying other behavious that could be deemed as typical in an unneutered male, i.e., extreme restlessness, marking indoors, etc. No humping behaviours thankfully... yet lol... We adopted him from a raw-feeding, no vaccine breeder who also recommended we wait until at the earliest 18 months to neuter.. He's 13 mos. now so that would take us into next April.. I just don't know whether we can wait [tolerate the behaviour] that long.. Confused

Can you enlarge on the "extreme restlessness," What exactly you mean by that? What symptoms does he show?

This is your words with your construction put on them. I'll put another construction on it, "Excitment, pleased to see you, pleased to be going out somewhere exciting."

You see I also have one who loves to chat to me, and her dad did before. I love the trait, we hold long meaningful discussions about the political and financial situation of the world. Wink

To me you have said nothing which would lead me to believe this is of a sexual nature, or that castration would make the slightest difference.

Regards, John

I have two male labs - both still have all their tackle. Coll is not a very vocal dog but Muck is - I've put it down to attention seeking as it is often when you have left the room or he wants cuddles, wants his tea, wants to sit next to you, wants more water cause the bowl is empty or sometimes he wants to go for his walk. If you ignor his whining he will sometimes give you a bark (and then stare intently at you trying to pass his thoughts into your brain) or give you a paw or try and jump on you.

Coll does none of this. He never whines (and I mean never).

Perhaps somebody has some training methods to help solve the problem.

Good luck
Jackie

It sounds as though Aero has got used to the timings you have, you have a cuppa then take him out, when you go out you always go to the same place where he knows he`ll be off lead.

You could try varying things a bit, it may make him whine all the more to begin with but he should get used to the fact that things aren`t going to happen as he dictates, your in charge you make the rules Very Happy

I agree with John that castration won`t make any difference to the whining, if he was humping all the time that would be a different matter.

Tucker is castrated and he is a whiner talker too. He is excited - 'my friend s one the other side of the road and I want to say hi', 'my friend is on the other side of the training hall I want to say hi', 'you're putting your wellies on too slowly and I want to be out walking!', 'we're in the car and I don't know where we going... please don't keep it a surprise I can't wait to know'.... types of whines!

He also does the 'but WHY are we leaving the training ground/park/Toby my friend at his house' cry as we leave somewhere too!

I don't know whether he was much of a 'talker' before castration as he was done before he came home.

Like John - we have some interesting chats and Luna always looks on with a despairing 'I'm fed up of you asking 'are we nearly there yet'!!' look on her face! Very Happy

Willow is a girl and she whines if she wants out, or her tea or if she wants more attention she is just a chatty girlie. You certainly know when she wants or needs something as nothing will shut her up until she has what she wants

Bella is another whiny girl and has this high pitched bark if she is ignored Rolling Eyes

She even does it at bed time if we are "late" going to bed, she soon lets me know about it Rolling Eyes Laughing On one occasion when I had a friend round (thus later bedtime), she didn't stop for half an hour and ignoring her just made her worse Shocked

Apologies for the delay in response - first forum I've belonged to that I've had to pay for, so needed to consider that one for a bit LOL!

Incessant marking, urine licking, dominance play, restlessness.. He's not a humper thankfully, but have seen him from time to time at the dog park getting a little humpy.. In terms of restlessness, the boy can't sit still for 2 minutes.. Even at night - he sleeps, oh, maybe 45 minutes at a time then is up, roaming and whining..
