I got one shortly after I got Bella as she was up the stairs like a shot the first day she was home with me. My main concern was with the strain on her joints with constant up and down (if I'd allowed her!)

I have a dog gate across the door to the hall so they can't go upstairs, I did have a baby gate but switched to a tall dog one as my Pointer is more than capable of getting over a baby one!!
I have a baby gate and have done since CoCo came home. She is now 2 and I only use the gate when she comes into season as I don't want any mess uptairs on my bed, and it went up when she was nearly due to whelp

IMHO it is totally necessary to protect their developing joints and minimise the risk of damage - the fact it stops them destroying the house is a plus - apart from my eldest - none of mine have ever been allowed upstairs.
I bought a normal baby-gate from Argos - much cheaper than a so called dog gate - where actually, we couldn't get one wide enough to fit out stairs in two of the three houses we've lived at without forking out a fair bit of extra cash and then waiting for it to arrive.
Baby gates have all the extras included for wider stairways - plus they are cheaper
Im in the camp of being for stair gates. We had 2 of the high pet/baby gates for the kitchen door when Indi was a pup as our stairs were too wide for a baby gate. She was confined to the downstairs and we always had them shut. She would never go up them if left in the hall as she struggled as they were quite steep - She use to bunny hop up them and then run out of energy on the half landing! Now we still have the gates on but leave them open and she goes and lies in the hall or at the bottom of the stairs. She will push her luck and sneak up the first few but i go to the bottom and she looks around the corner at me with that "hehe im naughty but you wont tell me off look" and i quickly tell her down and down she comes!!!She knows its naughty to go upstairs but will push her luck. She only comes upstairs if invited now - for example I had a day upstairs sorting and cleaning the other day and she came and lay down in the same room and watched me do the housework.
Thanks for all your advice, OH realised that it was necessary after telling him about joints and how its bad for puppies to be going up and down stairs.
