personally, I would not 'overdo' it at such a young age, she is still not 6 months and you don't want to confuse the poor girl Smile She is still young and needs to enjoy herself without to much pressure. I would not worry about a good delivery at this stage, just let her enjoy coming back. As I said earlier, I put to much pressure on Mylo with the delivery and it switched him off, I am now having to work extra hard to get it right (he's 14 months).

I would also say, be relaxed, very relaxed! Your dog will pick up on any tension or anxiety you have in training very quickly, adding pressure to her. Again, this was one of my problems, I was expecting to much to soon. Mylo is a very bright dog and came on very quickly, I should have slowed things right down and enjoyed his early months much more.

Laura (Stauntonvale) gives great advice as ever on teaching the 'happy hold' and its essential for a pet dog.... they have to want to hold it and 'show you'....

I think the thing being there are a lot of different things going on here and a few mixed signals and a few areas where you are focusing too much on something when you need to nail something else first....

BUT, what is your long term plan.... do you want a working gundog? Or a pet dog who does some gundog stuff? Or an obedient pet who just does what you ask round the home and on walks.... it can make a difference.... D xx

one thing no one has mentioned (unless i missed it) is that you are teaching the 'stop' with your whistle but with a down command?

If you want to do gundog work - be that on a shoot or in tests, you'd need a sit not a down on a stop whistle Smile

if you don't want to do gundog work then a stop/down emergency stop is a useful thing to have as a pet owner

she is going to be a working gundog - Glenns gundog my pet dog but potentially doing some working trials.

Glenn has trained all his own gun dogs in the past, but I wanted to be the one doing the training with her as Im the one who spends the most time with her, glenn only gets to train her at week ends.

I havnt a clue what Im doing, Glenn does but I just wanted some 'professional' help. Perhaps I should just let Glenn do it afterall I just wanted to say 'hey look how well Ive trained this dog for you' if you know what i mean ?

Lucy, heres a thought, why not come to the HERTS training day onfoot in jan without her and you will see it all pieced together and worked on and pick up the understanding of how thing teaches another teaches another and why, in practice.... I reckon it would answer a lot of your questions. And meantime, she is very young, just work hard on her general heelwork, off and onlead making it consistant. Teach her to sit on one pip of the whistle at your side as you heel. Teach her a rock solid stay and return to her all the time don't recall her, to teach proper steadiness. And don't worry about retrieveing, she obviously is keen, best to see it all stringed together first....??

Di
