Comes to you with Champers in hand Our Novice trial win. MY first trial win and one that I wanted so much for so many reasons!! We knocked on the door, then stood for several weeks with the door being slammed soundly shut on several occasions, trialing is SUCH and uppy downy kind of a game!!
Driven trial. Mostly on seed and kale. Fields seperated by deep ditches with cover. On a mix of Partridge, Pheasant and Duck.
I was Number one. When rung from the reserves list that gave me a moments panic, but hey, it can help you or hinder you... and praise be to him upstairs it helped me today.
Round One. First drive unfortunately provided the trial with only 2 birds. First in the first retrieves for numbers 1 and 3. Mine was through kale, through a ditch, out onto plough, back and hunt to pick.
So everyone sat through a second drive which was the total opposite of the first, birds galore! The first and second rounds were completed here with my second in the first being a **** bird in kale in an area with multiple birds out in, and my second round being similar but a lot longer retrieve on a diagonal with only one bird left in a reasonably sized area to work for. Kale HAS been my bogey.... no more
So we moved to a third drive and,, guess what? I'm number 1, and they just finsihed the second round, so guess who is sat in line!!!??? Yep. Luckily this lovely little dog who i adore gives me a lot of confidence in a drive and has a fair bit of experience now and I can now swing about marking stuff down and not feel too vunerable (although there for the grace of god and all that!!!!)
The third drive went quiet on us again and put about 6 birds on the deck, and one that came down through a tree into a bush and a deep ditch. The dog before us tried for it but didn't quite pick it, and so we had a chance of an eyewipe and took it, and picked. Bondy likes ditches
Sadly not enough game was down to complete the third round for the dogs in line and so, guess what?? We moved to another drive, a duck drive and, yes, we were under the judges still, so in line .... Ducks into kale. The guns shot well and dropped plenty of birds to complete the trial as only around 7 dogs remained.
Having been told for the fourth time that I was the dog who would have the first retrieve so would be sent for any runners during the drive... I winced as a lightly hit duck come over the guns, got a secon shot in it, but flew strongly on until it started crusing in over the brow of the field about 150 yards away.... NOOOO! But YES! The sending judge took us fast across the field about 50 yards, checked my mark was his mark as a general area it cruised into, and as we agred he said to send... Dog went out well, got the sort of distance you would start thinking was a possibility at about 100 yards, pulled sharp right, started properly hunting, gave me the sign he was on it, danced with it for quite a few yards tracking it, then bang, picked.... OHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I was one happy bunny!!
So that completed my third round, and the fourth was a dead bird down a fair time in the kale, about 75 yards out with a decent mark given. About 20 yards out, Bondy screeched to a halt and picked a duck, on line. The lovely lovely judges, took that and sent him back, where upon he went a bit deep, was brough back a bit, put a bit left and then hit some scent (thank god!) and picked!
Dogs had put themselves out and dogs had been dropped and we were down to three dogs for this final round. We backed up for the other two remaining dogs in the fourth and final round, then trial over was declared. We won! My speech was, of course, LONG and emotional. I've worked dogs for 17 years. I've trialed three VERY different dogs over 4 seasons... and this is MY first win (although darling Fish did us proud a few weeks ago). As I said to a friend today, as regards this difficult game: 'Youve got to have a dream, if you don't have a dream, how you gonna have a dream come true...?' That, tonight, is me. A dream come true. My bar will now raise massively, but tonight - Good work the Meercat!!
Take care all
Di xx
