I have started training Charlie He can now sit on command. Actually he just sits beside me the whole time expecting something =/ I am now working on Lie Down. I just started this evening.
Let me explain a little something before I tell you how it went..
On youtube there is a channel called 'Kikopup'. The trainer is so good and I really like her videos. So I watched and tried the video 'Before you start training your puppy with treats' Basically hold the treats in your hand and let him sniff and try to get them. The second he stops click and reward. I did this with Charlie and now he never tries to get the treats out of my hand! He did really well with that one. But this is where the problem is..
I usually teach 'Down' by holding a treat in my hand and pulling it down then back towards me which should make the dog lie down..But since Charlie now thinks he cannot go near my hands he just sits there looking at me or my hand! Grrr XD So I had to wait a few minutes before he lay down and then I clicked a rewarded. We did it about 5 times and it took him at least 3 minutes each time to lie down...
Does anybody use any other methods to teach 'down'?
Another problem is he will not get out of the sit! I am trying to teach a release cue but he will not budge..I could walk to the other side of the room and he will stay sitting there with a look as if to say ' I am sitting where is my treat?!' I guess his stay might turn out good? Lol. He is just a little too clever.
So that is it really..He can sit and is learning to lie down very slowly. And I only say slowly because he had 'sit' after 3 tries and 'leave the treats' after 1 try...Hmmm.
Here are some pictures.
He has twine again because a man was meant to come look at the boys and I was at work..But of course he did not come =/ That is 3 times people were meant to come and they didn't!! Oh and I would have a collar but the other pups ate it =( So I had to buy a new one and it is staying off until the pups are gone XD
When he did eventually lie down he was very proud of himself..
FOOD!..I was trying to get him up..When he did lie down he would not get up XD

Charlie sounds like he is doing fantastic He is so cute have you tried the down with a toy or ball instead of a treat and remember he is still so young so he is doing really well

Of course I never thought of a toy! But it is really funny..With treats he is really calm...After we finished I gave him his toy and he just went crazy! He went from being very serious to a loony lab!

Wow, if Charlie carries on like this, he will be on Mastermind in less than a year.
I've taken Toby to loads of obedience classes and spent a fortune, but you wouldn't really know it, I'm sure Toby is really intelligent, it's his dad who's thick.
Charlie looks like a lovely pup, looking forward to reading about his progress and seeing more photos of him, Marley and Coco.
Take Care.
Gary and Toby.
That reminds me.. I do have to take more pictures of Coco and Marley! The pups have taken over my camera!
He is pretty clever if I do say so myself XD But Marley was clever too until he hit 10 months old..Then the craziness started. I will do anything I can to make sure Charlie does not be like him
But I am failing..Charlie has started barking for attention and at dogs..Already! I have to get that out of him before it gets worse and he is strong enough to drag me across the ground.

So today I tried again with the 'down' I have not trained him since monday so I thought he would have forgotten...But he was 100% better than the first few times I tried! The first time I tried to guide him down he did it!! I guess those few days got him thinking XD So I kept doing that until he was doing it straight away and then I started saying 'down'. He got it a few times but sometimes he just looked at me like 'what?!' So I went back to guiding him and saying down as he hit the floor. He did great! And I mixed it up a little. Sometimes I asked for Down from sit and sometimes from standing. Because when I go to Marley he sits and when that does not work he lies down XD
Charlie is 10 weeks old on sunday! Where has the time gone...I think he is really small for 10 weeks. So I am guessing he will take Coco's height..Maybe a bit taller since he is up past her legs now!
Here are some pictures from today's training.

Charlie is lovely he looks a good size Sara What I do with Max is a sign when I say down I put my finger/hand in the air raised up then bring it down to my hip that's my sign for down just so if ever he can not hear me he still reads the sign he does this much better than just a verbal command Your Charlie is doing great.
