Posted: Sat Nov 05, 2011 8:32 pm Post subject: Urgent! More help please... boy or girl?
Those of you who saw my earlier posts will be aware that we've suddenly got a spare 8-week old puppy from our Sophie (2-yr old chocolate bitch). We were going to have a boy, so we picked one for ourselves - not the biggest, not the liveliest, but the one that we felt fitted us best.
Now we've unexpectedly got a lovely girl back, and my wife and kids have decided they want to keep her. We've always had bitches, and I'm hankering after the daft affection of a dog. If we keep a dog he'll be neutered, bitch will probably stay complete.
Both pups are fab, Sophie probably gets on a little more easily with the girl, but the boy is clearly more fun (i.e. bouncy/daft/trouble...)
Has anyone got any *real* insight/advice please (i.e. not the 'I've always had bitches' type I keep finding on the rest of the Internet)? I have to make a decision tonight because they spare pup is going to be advertised tomorrow, several of the pups are going to their new homes in the morning. Whichever choice I make will be good - they're both lovely pups - but I can't help but want the boy, and need to justify that choice to my family...
All I can say is that I really, really wanted a bitch, but my OH was set on a dog. I was very keen to convert him to dog loving (he was new to it) so I let him choose and we got a) a male b) with weird 'Dudley' colouring (I had wanted a classic 'proper' black pigmented and yellow lab and c) I let OH choose his name. My daughter and I wanted to call the puppy Bob.
But, Django's here, he's orange, he's male, he's a big, gangling glorious boy and we all just love him including OH (so puppy's done his job there!).
A long-winded way of saying it probably doesn't really matter - you'll love either. Or, keep both??
My Breeders husband wanted to have a boy too but they had a old dog who did not like male dogs. I would keep a boy if you have all girls they are so much fun and by the sound of it its time you had another male around
Sorry not a good argument but boys are so much fun

My ex had a thing about wanting girls, I had no preference so along came Loon. When we split I realised I really didn't have a preference and neither did Luna - our second dog had to fit us whether girl or boy. There were some absolutely lovely labs and lab-xs catching my eye on the rescue sites and then came Tucker!
He is more affectionate, bouncy and exuberant but also more controllable than Luna, he gave up humping shortly after being neutered, he doesn't lift his leg to wee, he has a bigger head which needs 2 hands to fuss and stroke, he is great with kids, he has a bigger, deeper bark which is good for making unexpected door salesmen wary,....... some boy plus points for you to sell to your family!
I grew up with male labs, wanted one so much that our first lab in adult life was called George (bitch at my wife's insistence but I wasn't going to let that stop me having a lab called George).
Just can't but help feel that I'm missing out on something if we go with another female...
Defiantly time for a boy dog particularly as its from your own girl just to even the balance Why not remind your wife that you always wanted a boy and that you even called your first lab a girl when you wanted a boy George just to please so just this once a boy is what you want and you never ask for much but can really see your self with a boy.

Great thread.
Toby is my son, To me he is a great advert for a male Lab, full of beans, full of fun, full of laughs, full of mischief, He is also Tuckers friend and agrees that Tucker is all of those things too.
All Labs are brilliant, but, KEEP YOUR BOY.
Take Care.
