Hi All
We recently bought a new puppy from a breeder advertising KC registered puppies for sale.
When we collected the pup we were told that the papers had not come through as yet and would follow on the next week.
Well 4 weeks later still no paperwork.
Now the breeder maintains that the KC have cocked up and that paperwork is on its way but I have contacted the KC who have no registration for the litter.
I have yet to tell the breeder I know this as they have had some bad news recently and I am prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt for a spell.
Now if it all goes bad we have been advised by the KC to take the breeder to court.
We will need to demonstrate we have been affected by the lack of paperwork.
our new pup is just going to be our pet and will not be bred with so we don't need any paperwork it's just that we have been miss-sold a dog under the sale of goods act.
It comes down to money so how much is the difference between having a KC registered dog to a non KC dog?
We didn't pay over the odds in fact less than £400 and we are not going to give up the dog.
So how much would you say we are out of pocket?
I have one KC registered lab and one not registered lab.
Charlie (not KC registered and no health tests) was £300 out of 'the Ad-mag' 6 years ago
Dudley (KC registered and parents health tested) £650 3 years ago
I think you could find there is a bit of a location divide on the price of a registered lab. Also it could be biased by the quality of the parents i.e. pups from 2 SH CH or 2 FTCH parents would probably be slightly more costly.
But to answer your question:
Theo: KC registered both parents health tested from working lines £450 at 8 weeks old
Digger: KC registered both parents health tested from working lines £500 at 18 weeks fully vaccinated and microchipped with a basic level of training
Both from SW England
This could potentially become interesting seeing the different prices of a lab puppy around the country.
It seems as if all might not be as you thought, and whilst you are prepared to give the breeder the benefit of the doubt because of personal circumstances, I think this says more about your decency than it does theirs.
The fact is, most KC reg pups are around £550 to £650, so anything a lot less than this and for me, alarm bells might be ringing.
However, you already have your girl, so it's job done, were there any health tests done. such as hip scores etc, the absence of these might also make me wonder about the integrity of the breeder.?
You obviously care about your pup so if it was me, I would put it down to experience and consider it a lesson learnt, and concentrate on your girl. Some things are hard to quantify in pounds and pence.
My last girl was £375, 13 years ago and KC reg (working lines but nothing special), my current girl was £550, half show half working and good lines. I am in Yorkshire.
Do you know if the parents of your pup were health-tested - and what did the breeder claim?
I've had paperwork take longer to come through than 4 weeks, although that was a long time ago before the heady days of online litter registration.
TBH - it should be more about stopping this woman than money surely - report her to tradiing standards - have you got misleading adverts you can use to prove her false claims?
More importantly now is to ensure that your pup is brought up to ensure that he is at minimal risk of developing problems with his joints through sensible diet and exercise during the first 12 months of his life.
Personally, I would report it and then put it down to experience.
Indi has show line in her and cost us £600 (South west). I was happy to pay that and our breeder had all the pups papers by our 1st visit at 5 weeks!! Sorry to hear you have been conned but im sure your pupster will thrive under your care.I agree to put your pup on a sensible diet and dont over exercise.
CJ was non registered and cost me £450 just over 7 years ago.
Personally I wouldn`t be being nice because they say they have personal problems, unless you know this to be definitely true, but I`m a cynic these days and would be suspicious at a personal problem coming up when your keep asking for Aggie 2`s papers.
We have just gone through this with our Springer - Izzy. She was sold to us as KC registered. After 6 months of emailing and promises we took the breeder to small claims court - £35 and very easy to do. Funny enough the KC papers came through this week. We will be taking out our claim as the papers were all we wanted. By the way we got Izzy when she was 9 weeks and she was 1 in August!!!
