Hi
We had exactly the same issues with the recall, my dog Ted, would just not come back, especially when other dogs were around. we just had to persevere with tasty treats and positive voices. we never went down the long lead alley, and never chased him,as we were told this form part of a game for him, we just got where he was and called and called him in a happy voice( with not so happy and embarrassed thoughts inside) until he came back. now 3 years old he is a very good dog who twirls on his smelly feet(see previous post) and recalls straight away.

I have had this problem SOOO many times. Frank went through some really dodgy episodes with his recall; and even now, if he encounters someone that has food, he's a nightmare. He just will not recall at all. The trick is to recall him before he gets past "the point of no return".

I think it's about more than recall, to be honest. A good recall comes down to your entire relationship with your dog. Because, unless your dog believes you are the most fantastic fabulous wonderful and exciting thing in the world, a recall when there are distractions, more interesting, or much more fun things, or food, than you is always going to be difficult.

Case in point - Rosie. Rosie is absolutely 100% focused on myself and my husband. Her recall is 100%. I can recall her from very long distances, when she is across a field or when she is out of sight with a whistle. I did not train her this; it's sheer luck! From day one we let her off the lead and she would always be looking for us, we recalled her, she came, she got lots of praise. Now she will come whether she gets praise or not.

Frank. I am ALWAYS doing recall training with Frank. Frank will come to me ONLY because he thinks he might get a special sausage treat. I carry kibble mixed with chopped frankfurter, and every few recalls he gets sausage. If he recalls from a distance or ignores a distraction, he gets sausage. But with Frank, I always have to be on the ball.
