Hi All,

Some of you may have read in my previous posts that my girl tess is 7 weeks pregnant and had been scanned by a breeder twice to confirm pregnancy. I have just come back from the vets to have her checked out just to make sure she is ok and have been told that she is producing milk that is abnormal and should not happen at 7 weeks and only happens a few days before birth she has also said that she cant feel and puppies in her tummy and she says she looks like a dog at full term but has confirmed she is not overweight??? she has said there is a good chance she is having hormonal problems due to the early milk and will likely miscarry. we are taking her back tomorrow to have her scanned at the vets to check the status of her unborn pupsters. if any of the experienced breeders have experienced anything like this before i would be really grateful for your advice as im worried for both my girl and the puppies now.

Rich

What rubbish, Ruby was producing milk at 6 weeks, looked full term and went on to have ten healthy puppies.

And about not being able to feel any pups..I could not feel any of Coco's pups at all! And she had 10 in there. So maybe they are just not being very active.

Basically what Vikki said. Some bitches start producing a little bit of milk, or the POTENTIAL of milk WELL before pup are born. I would honestly just go, get a proper vet ultrasound, get a definitive answer on whether you have pups in there and go from there. having milk at this stage is a GOOD sign not a bad one.....!! She won't bring it into use for ages yet but its there....

Yes of course there is no doubt that it can also be a sign of a phantom pregnancy, but if she is increasing in girth, two breeders have said she looks pregnant and she is producing milk, and you mated her twice, which i believe you did, chances are she is Wink

Hi Di,

Thanks for your response when she was scanned on saturday i saw the pups on the scanner saw there heads and could see there hearts beating i have no doubt that she is pregnant. but concerned that she said she could not feel anything and even more concerned that she was saying considering she could not feel anything how large she has got and that she was saying she was likely to miss carry due to producing milk early as this is conformation of hormone problems. im taking her to a different vet tomorrow for a second oppinion. just this vet has really worried me.

Many Thanks

Richard

I know nothing about pups and breeding at all but reading this thread and finding that you are going to a second vet for another opinion has reassured me!

Hope that your girl and pups are all happy and safe xx

Honestly, if you just had a scan and she is not losing any nasty discharge I would keep her home and away from vets with possible germs knocking about.

Brooke had milk about 8 days before we got any pups, she went to day 61.

I hate to say it, but your vet is talking absolute scaremongering rubbish... please don't go back to them for anything relating to your girls litter they sound very negative and very uninformed. I have yet myself to see a pup move let alone feel movement and I've had litters of 11 and 10.... others have, but over the years maybe I don't look or feel enough, but a bitch scanned with pups, growing in size is all completely normal, and then they can op milk in at anytime really. You might find next week it stops for a week or so till she is almost due. But to tell you based on that she may miscarry??? Thats absolutely mental. If anything it is showing how ready her body is with her sleeves rolled up!!!!

IF she miscarrys at this point which is very very very very rare in dogs... they reabsorb in early stages sometimes but very very rarely 'miscarry' litters like women, it won't be because her milk came in now.

Hi All,

First off thank you all for your advice you really put my mind at ease after seeing the vet. today i took tess to a different vet a much larger practice and she was seen by 2 different vets who both confirmed that she is the ideal size and weight for a bitch at 7 weeks her mamary development is also normal for her stage. they both said that producing milk at this stage is a little unusual but certainly nothing to be concerned about he said all dogs are different. he said she is not fulll of milk and only a little bit. they both said if she was full of milk they would be a little concerned but thankfully this is not the case. they both felt her tummy and said she is definitely pregnant. they both said any experience vet should know that palpating a bitch a 7 weeks will not reveal much at all they both said they would not expect to be able to feel much at this stage even if she was having a large litter due to the fluid that surrounds the fetal sacks. anyway im no longer worried and will keep a eye on her. they both said some bitches do misscarry but this is usually down to malnutrition or accidents but producing milk certainely will not cause this.

Many Thanks

Rich

I`m glad you`ve been reassured by another vet Richard, I would certainly be reassured by what those who have bred litters have said too, after all they`ve actually experienced it for real.

I hope Tess` whelp goes well and she gives you lovely healthy pups and is well herself as well, thats what you really want Smile
