Scary isn't it? I looked at the cost of shipping a dog unaccompanied back to the UK and that put me off enough!
As for £/AS$ that's one of the reasons why my company have a office in Sydney - the exchange rate means the Ozzies can afford expensive long distance travel!

I never use pet movers if possible, i book the cargo flight myself, do the drop off and vets stuff myelf etc and i'm told certain airlines charge per 'item' not volume, so work out cheaper for labs (not to aus but to UK or US, i'm told KLM is v reasonable).
When we flew B back from singapore we paid half of what we'd paid if we'd used a petmover.
Yes I imagine an aussie travel office is booming right now - our close friends have never been able to afford so many overseas trips.....they say it makes a nice change that the $AU is now finally worth something

Just thought i'd update this, I know it's not relevant to anyone else (yet) but might be useful for someone searching one day.
So to recap,
Basil last rabies vacc'd in July 2010 (jab has 3yrs validity), passed the titre test in October 2011 with flying colours - 3.07 (0.5 is the pass mark).
Clearly for him the vacc does it's job and lasts.....or else he's come into contact with rabies recently and is showing an immune response
Nellie last rabies vacc'd in August 2009, had 2 jab initial dose then not 1. Her titre test back in 2009 was 3.97 (after an initial fail first time around then)
Nellie failed her titre test in October 2011, just 0.06 . She required a booster and has only just scraped a pass with the repeat test at 0.56.
Unless i'm misunderstanding titre tests i'm intrigued that Nells immunity from the vaccine is so low tbh.
I know in europe they vacc annually but in the US most states are successfully campaigning that the rabies shot be 3yrly and some studies are demonstrating a 7yr period of validity.
It just goes to show how much it varies from dog to dog I suppose.
I'm going to be titre testing next year instead of the regular DHPPi annual vacc boosters and tbh this makes me suspect that for Nell it might be a fail again and she may just be a dog that *needs* her boosters.
