Not a lab question but you lovely and knowledgable people of the FTGW forum may know the answer (and general gundog forums scare me...)

Our rescue sprocker has a long tail...anyone know where the law stands/where vets stand on docking, or amputating an adult dog's tail to prevent tail damage in the field?

Thanks!

I don't know where the law stands but from reading on a HPR forum lots of GSP owners have found it difficult to locate vets that will do it even on pups.

Found this
http://www.cdb.org/awa/index.htm

Looks like only puppies under 5 days can be docked not adults, not sure if this is still the case though.

Cant be done, Sorry!

To my knowledge, in most of the UK only certain breeds can be docked, and that does not include crossbreeds. In Scotland I believe the ban it total.

Have a read, http://www.cdb.org/awa/

Regards, John

If your dogs tail is already damaged then it CAN be done in Scotland. Pasco had half his tail amputated last year just before the start of the season. But that was after a long long long drawn out process of tail damage and illness.

Having said that its not really necessary if the dog hasn't damaged his tale already. There are ways to strap the tail up to avoid injury all together.

Are you planning to work your sprocker?

Oh yes, but thats amputation, not docking, so is normally only enough to remove the damage to get back to sound tail.

Thats true John. But because this is an adult dog wouldn't it be considered amputation?

Thanks for the relies guys...

I had already looked at the cdb website, and so knew for pups about the 5 day rule.

Daisy had her first day beating yesterday, oh is planning to rough shoot with her. She got her tail caught a couple of times yesterday...no damage. I guess that if damage does coccur, a vet would make the call whether or not to operate and perform an amputation. I was just wondering if anyone had taken/knew of an adult dog having a pre-emptive/precautionary amputation rather than as a result of damage?

Feebarn, I'm in the south of England.
