I don't think my lab puppy is doing too bad at housetraining as she can usually go on command but she never asks to go out which is a problem and if im not letting her out all the time and giving her that command, I often end up with puddles on the floor as she gives no warning!! shes 4 months ( 18 weeks) just wondering what age are labs generally housetrained at ? thankss Smile

My first labXcollie was 8mths before he was house trained Shocked

Mambo (lab) was about 5mths and Skittle (lab) was 4mths, our last fosters retrieverX? where 'dry and clean' when they left here at 12 wks!! They are all different and each dog will 'train' in its own time!!!!! tis a bit like getting a baby/toddler potty trained!!!!! No set time, just nature at its best Laughing

jessie was house trained during the day early on (about 12wks or so) but night time was another matter entirely. we now have her in a crate at night and she now goes all night. BUT we dont have room for the crate so it cant stay forever but hopefully long enough to teach her to be dry at night.

Jessie is 17wks

Baxy was housetrained by 4 months (we crate trained him) and he's not had one accident since. He was easy to housetrain!

Hattie, on the other hand, is a nightmare! She's 10 months now and is still crated as she will poop and tiddle by the back door in the night. She will happily poop/tiddle by the back door if I don't let her out in time/frequently enough Shocked She's fine in her crate though Rolling Eyes

Summer is coming up for 6months and still isnt entirely housetrained, she is very much like your dog she goes outside fine and on command but doesnt ask to be let out and has no warning either so we still end up with puddles if we dont let her out all the time! We have tried everything with her but got no where she has good days and bad days

Django is 10 months and still not completely house-trained, I don' know why. He does make an effort to get to the door and I can't entirely blame him, because if I'm not around to let him out then he can't get out alone. We've mostly got hard floors (easy to clean) and I've decided not to fuss too much. I have other animals, cat and dog and I'm afraid there are accidents, always have been (we've always had pets) and always will be. OH hates it so I cover up as much as possible and I do try to get him out regularly!! I'm not sure if he's the problem, or me. I think we're both a bit dim in this area.

I got the carpets cleaned when Bella was 5 months old, she was still having accidents, but I was fed up with all the wee patches. Since getting the carpets cleaned, she hasn't had any accidents. She was clean through the night by 4 months, but this may be because she sleeps in my bedroom and although I had puppy pads initially, she just stopped using them and started waking me up instead.

She will only bark to go out when we are upstairs (and I'm working), otherwise she just sits by the back door and waits.

My quickest pup to be clean was my Collie x and she was was consistently clean, day and night (and not crated) and asking to go out by 7 weeks old. My longest to get clean was Pood (Min Poodle) and she was 12 MONTHS old and still having the odd accident, after that. In between those two, I've had most clean by about 4 months.

Them asking to go out and them being clean has been two different things in many cases though. It takes some a while to link the two things together, so I'm always on the ball and don't rely on them actually Asking until they are at least 6 months old, sometimes older.

CJ was house trained almost instantly as I recall, as Jules says though going outside and asking to go takes a little longer, you need to keep an eye on Roxie for signs she may be wanting to go, circling, sniffing around are just a couple.

Most dogs have their own way of indicating their needs, CJ stands and stares at me, Cindy used to run backwards and forwards and yap if I took no notice.

Talking of Cindy she took a year to be fully house trained, all dogs are different, patience and perseverance are the key Very Happy
