I'm new to this forum and just found it through google as open to any ideas 2 get my lab puppy to walk!!
I have a yellow labrador called Roxie who was born in June 11, shes good in almost every way apart from walking!! She is very laid back and quite lazy but every time I try to take her for a short walk she will walk 2 steps..then sit down.. then lay down. And walks are taking forever!! I try encouraging her to walk with treats, squeaky toys another person walking in front of her almost everything tbh! Crossing roads is dangerous and i end up having to throw treats ahead of me and then she will walk but i dont like to encourage this as she will just become greedy etc!
Does anyone have any ideas or is this a phase they go through and will it improve with daily walks. Help please! Thankss
I'm sure there's more professional advice on what to do but our yorkie x chihuahua refused to walk on his lead at all. We tried luring him and encouraging him and all sorts of things - he was having none of it.
Then we took him to Pets At Home and all of a sudden he found that he COULD move on his lead Everything smelled soooooooooo exciting and interesting that he spent ages exploring. He's not looked back since

I don't think it is unusual for this to happen, but Sarahs advise made me smile and sounds like a really good idea. I would try to encourage without the treats though as Roxie has found the perfect way to get her daily treat fix [clever girly], have you tried walking with another dog walker, or classes.
ok thanks everyone for the replies and I am following the 5 min rule so its not like its even a long walk for her! I did try taking her to a pet shop a while ago but she kept stopping again to try to eat everything!!... but I could try it again. And I am at puppy classes at the moment but she is usually the slowest one at walking the only thing I havnt tried is walking with another dog so maybe that could be worth a try. Thanks for the repliess
Definitely try with another dog, and keep her on a long line but if she stops just keep walking and fussing the other dog.... she will feel left out and join you in the end (even if you have to stop at the end of the line until she does).... don't look at her when she has stopped, ignore her until she comes up to you.
I smiled when I read your post, because my Kenko is the same age(born june 6th) Kenko was exactly the same...and yes,it's very trying, but it will pass,as it did with Kenko. My tactic,if you've got the time, was not to force Kenko. When he stopped, and sat/layed down,I stopped walking(I had to,he refused to budge ) He eventualy became bored being sat/laying in this one place, and eventualy decided to move on.This tactic wont work if your Roxie decides to doze off !! Now there's no stopping him, because he's realised that if he continues walking he discovers new exciting things and smells...mostly pretty disgusting!! Nothing like a good sniff and taste of a cow pat !!!.Having said that, there's still the small road through the village that he flatly refuses to cross. So I have to pick him up and plonk him down on the other side...that can't continue for long because he's starting to get a bit heavy !!
Ok thanks I will see of I can walk with another dog and glad Kenko is the same good to know I'm not the only one!! Will try just standing still then and see if Roxie will get bored. I used to have to carry her across roads too but she is also getting quite heavy!
I am so pleased to read this!!! We have Dexter a 6month old Lab. He has been in kennels since 4 weeks old and we got him 21/2 weeks ago. He also sits and refuses to walk. It takes AGES to get to the end of the street! When he sees another dog , he is off and has a brilliant time running around. I use treats and sometimes lift him for a short while but he is HEAVY!!! He is getting better though - slowly . I do stand and look the way I want to go and he sits and looks at the way home, eventually either a dog comes along or he decides to walk.
Look forward to hearing more ideas and stories
