Maple and Alfie Cavvie have been on Skinners for about four months now, I moved them off James Wellbeloved and then Arden Grange due to price really. They have also had a spell on CSJ (too much maize left in poo and they were having to 'go' all the time). I liked the Skinners because the hypo Duck contained just rice rather than maize and seemed to be low in unecessary extras and EC permitted additives and I could buy 15kg for £19.49

However.....Maple over the last couple of months has started to want to eat her own poo, it is just her own and even though its cleared off the patio asap, she will still try and get it before I do.

Alfie has also got the most terrible room clearing wind and both dogs seem to be very hungry.

Sprocket pup is on the puppy version and Im having trouble keeping weight on him.

So I think its time for a change..however....Im not going to be working for a while (having a major op in a couple of weeks) so cost AND decent quality of food is going to be the priority.

I have tried Wainwrights in the past, but just really not sure about it, especially as Wainwrights is £34.99, I get these:

Brown Rice (min. 38%), Duck Meat Meal (min. 28%), Whole Linseed (min. 5%), Whole Grain Barley (min. 14%), Sugar Beet Pulp (min. 8%), Poultry Fat (min. 3%), Poultry Digest (min. 2%), Minerals, Alfalfa (min. 1%), Seaweed (min. 0.5%), Sodium Chloride (min. 2500mg/kg), Potassium Chloride (min. 2200mg/kg), Methionine (min. 510mg/kg), Yucca Extract (min. 100mg/kg), Marigold Meal (min. 50mg/kg), L-Carnitine (min. 3mg/kg), Beta Carotene (min. 1.4mg/kg).

Im just really stumped, CSJ gave really frequent large poos with undigested cereal, Skinners doesnt seem to do them much good, Wainwrights is rather expensive for lots of fillers and 'digests' and Arden Grange is just out of my price range now.

I can get food from Pets at Home and this place http://animals.taylorschoice.co.uk/categories/dry_dog_food.php (have a look at the list down the side).

What do you suggest I do?? Honestly, I probably have about £25 to feed both Alfie and Maple and 15kg bag lasts just under 4 weeks.

Any suggestions really welcome.

Just a thought - feel free to shout me down if you like Wink but have you thought about using Chappie complete. Its cheap as chips and really seems to suit a lot of "difficult" dogs.

I have used Chappie complete and is good for the price too, I also use Wagg as a fall back as it's £10 in Tesco for a 15KG sack

Ive used chappie complete in the past with my first dog and just found the same as the CSJ really, large amounts of poo with lots of undigested cereal. Ive used the tinned version when we have had a dicky tummy, but not had the same result with the dried sadly. (Dont worry would never shoot anyone down, tis a good suggestion Very Happy )

I was looking at Autarky on that site, anyone got any opinions on that one? Its first ingredient is maize followed by Chicken meat meal and then chicken fat, so probably not a lot of actually chicken in it Sad

Anyone got any opinions on Chudleys? Its a Dodson and Horrell food, used to use them for my horses but what is the dog food like?

Unfortunately with any of the "not so expensive" foods you will get poorer ingredients and more poo production. Twas ever thus Wink .

Chudleys is a good food that i know alot of working kennels use but i think you'll probably find the results may well be the same as for skinners etc as the ingredients are similar i think.

i think if your budget is tight i'd go for something that gives firm poops and good condition and just deal with the possible amounts of poop that come out the other end.

If your price range is about £25 a bag and Arden Grange suited, then Berriewood Wholesale sell the lamb one in breeder bags, £52 for two 15kg bags and free delivery.

Or another one that suited Murphy way back was Supadog sensitive which I believe is around £20-25 a bag, more or less just lamb and rice. He kept good condition on it too from what I remember. They sell it in pets at home but I think vetuk are probably cheaper. Worth you checking out, we had no wind and poo's were firm.

I meant to say, Dudley has the salmon one. The salmon is listed first so I guess that means it has more slamon than anything else - no maize in it

Ingredients:
Salmon, rice, oats, chicken fat, yeast, full-fat linseed, alfalfa, prairie meal, peas, unmolassed beet pulp, dicalcium phosphate, mannan oligosaccharides, milk thistle, marigold, nettle, seaweed, blackcurrant extract, carrot, yucca extract, thyme, beetroot, tomato, peppermint, fennel, paprika, turmeric, dandelion, ginger, fenugreek, rosemary extract, oregano & aloe vera
