The only way you are going to find out if he is ok out of the crate, is to try not shutting him in there. It's not really an age thing, it's more an individual personality thing, I think.

Totally depends on the dog. As mentioned before, try it for small periods of time and then extend it.
I'm desperate to get rid of ours too, but at nearly 3 years old - although ours is 99.9% trustworthy, he would be devastated if we folded it down. It's his little den.
