The only way you are going to find out if he is ok out of the crate, is to try not shutting him in there. It's not really an age thing, it's more an individual personality thing, I think. Wink

Totally depends on the dog. As mentioned before, try it for small periods of time and then extend it.

I'm desperate to get rid of ours too, but at nearly 3 years old - although ours is 99.9% trustworthy, he would be devastated if we folded it down. It's his little den.

Bodie never really had a crate - he hated it, and since we had Daisy she's always been out with him. So I'd say trust him. If in doubt, get some raw beef bones in the freezer and when you go out, give him (and the girls!!) one to munch on to keep him busy! They last HOURS (Bodie will munch ALL day and ALL night and ALL the next day and keep going back to it) so no worries about him getting through it quickly! Very Happy

We are lucky to have a large kitchen so I had a pen when they outgrew their crate. They were 3 before we took the pen down permanently as George is a chewer and I knew I couldn't trust him prior to that, I still don't trust him fully so they are confined to the kitchen whilst we are out now.

I agree with the previous comment that it all depends on the dog. George and Benson are the same age and I know I could leave Benson with the whole house and he wouldn't touch a thing whereas George is an incident waiting to happen Laughing
